google, all the information is there if you want to look for it, it took my maybe an hour if that to get started this week

no need for him to retype whats already been said on countless pages, and he has provided good info in this thread.

basically, ati video cards, cgminer or guiminer, a pool to mine in and some configuration and boom, you're an internet prospector

For someone who's just interested in mining, would it be more efficient to buy one of those dedicated mining machines rather than building a desktop?

Hey @Luis_GT, I think I'm gonna sit MaxCoin out... I looked into it today and it seems like a complete mess! Servers going down, DDoS attacks, the shitty wallet, and of course the insane value fluctuation. I think I missed my chance lol.

That being said, PLEASE let me know if there is a new AltCoin ripe for the picking. I check the Overclockers forum AltCoin thread occasionally, but not often enough that I can spot a Hash and Dash at it's conception...

For now, I'm stable on Doge and I'll keep mining it. I got some risers too, so i might play around with some custom mounting for the cards, as well as maybe getting a few more cards to play with...

left everything running maxcoin overnight about 20 coins. Assuming i can transfer it into btc with no issues thats easily better than the pools had been, but not earth shattering either.

mining on middlecoin is better than straight doge... middle coin mines doge when its profitable.

Not worth it... BTC difficulty is to high, you'd need a 3thash system, and even then you might not get ROI

@Luis_GT, my desktop has the following.

I7 930 (2.8ghz)
8gb
Nvidia GTX 560
500GB non SSD
Corsair 750W

If I were to start mining, I'd upgrade to an AMD dual GPU. Do you see any parts limiting my mining? I know mining is GPU intensive, but wasn't sure there are other major bottlenecks. I'd upgrade the cooling system as well.
