The second gear is like that to many cars, even in my old vr4. It is not a bad sign. Take steps

1/ warm up the car idling
2/ throw into second gear, even if it is not going in, keep on it, dont force it, and it will go in.

This has to be the design of the transmission with the safety mechanism, but you are fine. Try change transmission oil, it will work better as this was what i did in my vr4

Yeah, mind doesn't like second while cold either. I also find myself getting hung up on something when downshifting from 5th to 4th quite often. You really can't move the stick "diagonally" at all when doing that or there's some gate or something that it catches on. Very annoying. That happens at all temps.

1st-2nd is smooth once it gets to working temperature. Before it gets warm, I take it easy while shifting 1st to 2nd because it feels like I'm grinding it even when I'm not.

I don't have as many issues shifting into second as I do shifting out of it. When cold, it tends to "stick" in second making the 2-3 shift a bit more labored.

I had this for awhile too. Learned that if I go slower in second, stick in the powerband for a bit longer and basicly "push" the car from 2nd, giving a little more throttle right before shifting, I can usually get a 2nd-3rd gear shift with much smoother syncro action.

Just hit 1,000 miles, and my 2nd to 3rd started to be clunky. It's like something is not lining up.

Machines are designed to work at work temperatures. Let it warm up properly. The engine is NOT the only thing that needs a warmup. There's the differential and suspension system, for instance. Anyone involved in racing knows what 'cold' tires can / cannot do.

Late to this party, but I too have been having this issue from the time I got the car. I currently have 7800 miles on the ODO.

Frankly, I thought this was one of the safety mechanism features installed on the vehicle that saves you from shifting into second gear at high speeds. I see the logic in this as my friend blew his engine up when he shifted accidentally from 5th to 2nd on his e46.

This problem is at its worst during cold weather and right now its buttfuckin' cold, here in Michigan! So it takes a lot of time to heat the engine up.

Also, if it helps others, once you start driving and the issue is still present, try changing gears below 7mph. That kinda works for me, though its not really smooth. As I drive along and the trans oil heats up, it goes back to its 'buttery' state. Frankly, I love the MT in BRZ and this is just something I have agreed to adjust to while driving!

It's also a good thing to have in the tool belt in case you have a synchro fail. It's not necessary, but it still has its uses.

Yeah, same issue here. Can shift into 2nd no problem, downshifting is a different story.

Have you considered using an engine block heater or a transmission heater?

Actually, I find the BRZ warms up quite quickly. You can tell by the climate control. The engine itself warms up more rapidly than the temperature gauge would indicate because the temp sender is downstream of the thermostat, as it is on most cars.

The transmission should begin shifting smoothly in cold conditions after just a few miles. Only the first couple of shifts are baulky. I expect the transmission will get much smoother with mileage, most do.

Nope, never actually thought of that! Might try that!
