just driving around Houston during the summer in a spirited manner I use to see oil temps of ~215-220. With my oil cooler I now see temps in the 185-200 range with the same driving. Oil temps never really goes below 185 (I have a thermostatic plate) for me. Oil temps in the core of the engine are likely hotter by 5-10 degrees so i figure the cooler keeps temps in the optimal range.

Installed mine this weekend with a change over to Millers Nanodrive 0W-30 race oil.

It's working really well. Not expecting the oil to ever exceed 220-230F again on track!

People often report 260+ degree oil temperatures on the track with our cars. (with no oil cooler)

The above listed Mobil 1 0W-20 at 270 degrees F is 5.01 cSt. Reference a couple paragraphs above, where I noted that the SAE defines a 20 grade oil as ranging from 5.6 to 9.29 cSt. At 270* F, the oil is no longer within its viscosity grade. Furthermore, most oils, even quality synthetics, will start to experience some thermal breakdown at these temperatures, especially with prolonged exposure.

For giggles, lets look at Mobil 1 15W-50 in an FA20 on the track WITHOUT an oil cooler...
At 212* F, we are at 18 cSt (well within the 50 weight oil range)
At 270* F, we are at 9.39 cSt (just barely above the 20 grade oil range)

So, if you plan on tracking the FA20 without an oil cooler, and want to make sure the oil in the sump stays within the factory recommended viscosity grade during your session, perhaps consider using a quality 40 grade oil.

Now there is another means to measure oil viscosity, and that is HTHS. But that is a topic for another day. Also, viscosity only plays part of the role of engine protection, and oils additive package also has a serious impact. So even if an overheated thin oil is squeezed out of the bearings under stress, there are additives in place to offer some protection during periods of boundary lubrication. But it gets rather complicated, and there are far better sources of information on the subject. www.bobistheoilguy.com

Also, on a side note, does anyone know where the ECU takes its oil temperature reading from? Is the sensor near the oil filter housing?
My only issue with running a higher viscosity oil on track was I saw about a 10*f increase in average oil temps running a 0w30 (GC) versus a 0w20 (Toyota SN), and I believe a 5w40 or 10w40 would increase oil temps even more.

I hit oil temps of 300*f on track my first day at Sebring in June, bone stock, and average temps during the day were high 280's to mid 290's. I sent in an oil sample to Blackstone and it came back great, with no evidence of the oil breaking down.

I just switched to 0w20 and saw oil temps in the high 270's, mid 280's (August), and will be running one more day on this oil before I send it in.

@swift996 Couple quick questions:

1. Where is your cooler mounted?
2. And do you have the stock hood on or a vented ne? From your sig I see stock but just want to ask.

I just installed my Mishimoto oil cooler with a thermostatic Mocal sandwich plate in the passenger fog light area and my FBM radiator, and my temps average 180 to 200 F daily driving. I have the Full Blown Motorsports stage 1 kit as well.

Just was curious if I would still need to invest in an vented hood to increase my cooling for track days. From your results, it doesn't look like I would need to.

Thanks.

Isn't the ecu pulling a lot of timing out at these coolant levels?

1 - Dead center (the Perrin mounting location provided in the kit). You can check my build thread for more pics if you need.
2- Stock hood.

I don't know how much heat that turbo radiates. I'm sure a vented hood would help but not sure how effective it will be. I have no experience there.

Yes it is, and I can definitely feel it.

I just got another Blackstone Labs UOA report with Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 with 4 track days on it, where oil temps were constantly in the 280's, and I even mentioned when I sent it into them that oil temps were in the 280's, and here is what they commented:

"SCOTT: Thanks for the notes on the oil temps. Although they seem a bit high, there wasn't anything here that shows any negative consequences as a result, so your engine and oil handled things pretty well. Silicon dropped into the average range now, so we've got a pretty good look at the air filtration system's effectiveness - it's working beautifully. Copper continued to come down too, so it looks like the last of the wear-in material has washed out well. No fuel or any other harmful contamination was found and low insolubles show good oil filtration. No issues here!"

So im going to be turbocharging my car, I daily drive it and will probably push it a bit more once its boosted. Im getting my oil changed in 2hrs... should I ask for a heavier weight? @FRSRAVEN
