2018 BRZ Ts C&D Lightning Lap

https://www.caranddriver.com/feature...inglap2018cars

Lightning Lap results posted. 5.7 seconds faster than the 2017 BRZ PP. 6.8 seconds faster than the 2016 MX5 Club. Not too shabby.

I've been waiting to see some more track results for the tS, because IMO it's more representative (most people who go to a track are going to ditch the Primacies pretty quickly). Nice to see it picked up almost 6 seconds around VIR, that's about 2-3 seconds on a shorter track. It's too bad they didn't have an ND2 this year, but I expect the extra 26 hp won't be quite enough to catch up.

To give an example, MT had the 2019 MX5 at their Best Driver's Car test this week. It lapped Laguna Seca 2.2 seconds faster than the 2016 MX5 Club (which ran 1:50.68).

1:48.47 was the time. Just over a second behind the 2015 STI. The 2013 BRZ ran a 1:51.3 so about 3 seconds behind.

I think it'd be really close between the two cars regardless of the track.

Nice, 2.2 is pretty significant at Laguna. VIR is definitely more of a power track, I think that's why both previous iterations of the BRZ on Primacies still led the MX-5. Hopefully we'll see more comparisons of the best versions of both cars.

I'm sure a huge part of the difference between the Performance Package and the tS is the wheels/tires. I wonder what kind of time the Performance Package would run if it had the tS wheels.

Wasn't the last brz tested in the wet?

Edit: ah PS4S is probably the rest of the improvement.

Looks like it's the PS4, not 4S.

Isn't the BRZ TS supposed to be track-focused? Seems silly that Subaru put the regular PS4 tire on there instead of the PS4-S or Cup 2. Not sure what they were thinking as it would have made a 1-1.5 second difference over a 1 minute lap.

Still, 4.6 seconds improvement overall for the TS vs. the 2013 BRZ is not bad.

Agreed. The BRZ tested last year was on a damp track. IIRC it's lap time was horrible and significantly slower than the BRZ tested there years before (2013 I think?).

2013 BRZ - 3:18.6
2017 BRZ PP - 3:19.7
2018 BRZ tS - 3:14.0

Considering VIR is a fairly long circuit and the '17 was 1 second behind the '13 on a cool, dry track, I'm willing to guess the '17 would've lapped somewhere in the 3:16 range. C&D said the track was dry but there were a few standing puddles on track.

Good tires definitely helped and while I don't really care about adding F/I to the vehicle, I can't help but wonder what kind of results would come if the car had a bit more grunt in the top end and less of a torque dip in the mid range.

Also worth pointing out that the track was repaved and slightly modified a few years ago, which made it faster.

So then in all reality.... the tS might not really be any faster than the '13

Obviously that isn't the case, because of the suspension/chassis improvements and tires. But perhaps the difference between the two is marginal.

I'm surprised nobody has done a direct comparison between the standard vehicle and the tS on a road course side by side.
