I have this noise as well. I get it when I depressed my clutch around 4000rpm when up shifting. Sounds like a broken saxophone.

Update: took my car to the dealer, replicated the noise with one of their tech's in the car and had the car in the shop for 2 days.

Today I picked up my car and the factory rep happened to be there and took a look at my car yesterday. He said that the noise is normal because they use straight cut gears rather than angled gears which tends to produce more noise. the guy said that the noise may go away with additional miles...

I also started looking through the forums in Japan and it seems like they have the same issues and can't do anything about it either.

I also tried searching around for straight vs angle gears and it seems the trade offs for straight over angle is more efficient gears but more noise and less durability.

Long story short, I guess we're stuck with the noise for the time being...

Guess I have the worst luck.. After reading this thread I drove to get some teriyaki and I experience the whirling noise for the first time. Had my car since July now has 8k miles on it also I just got it back from the dealer for the recall.

I wouldn't really know what kind of "feedback" it would constitute since it doesn't really tell us anything... -_-;

BUMP

so ever since it got cold around here -5 ~ -20 the noise went away, so whatever this is it's heat dependent .

also i have no clue why this would be the GEARS since it only happens when you slip the clutch.

hurmp

When I took mine in today, I mentioned it but the techs said they couldn't reproduce on their test drive. Since it seems intermittent (for me), and based on tokiokun717's feedback I didn't push the issue right now.

Like 7thgear, I do feel like something is just off about the whole thing, hopefully as more people mention it, it will be looked into more seriously and we can get an official response.

My wife thinks it's funny. Shift, honk. Shift, hoot.

And I'm old, 6+ manual cars, 100K+ each never replaced a clutch. I'm smoooooth like an automatic.

Just bought my FRS last month and after roughly 2,220 miles It goes the same thing between the same gears. Interesting

Mine does this when slipping the clutch. All it does is remind me I'm being lazy and slipping the clutch.

9,000 miles and i just got this as well in the exact same fashion and quality in which everyone on here has described. Anyone else braved the dealer for their opinion and got something other than gear cut?

This issue has essentially cleared up for me in the last 3 wks, and only 3 things have changed in that period:

1. I moved from Boston to SF, so there's been a significant ambient temp change.
2. I have focused on my clutch release, trying for clean releases, and a constant speed of release.
3. I had my oil and oil filter changed.

Further context: When I got the car off the transport, I still noticed the sound. 3 days later I got the oil change, and the noise very rarely occurs now.

I did have the dealer look into it when I got the oil change, and they said they couldn't replicate it.

My guess at this point is that it's a temperature thing, as I was focusing on clutch release before the move, and I can't figure a connection between the oil/filter change and what seems like a clutch sound...

- Sounds like a distant horn (could be described as high-pitched whirring as well). The first few times I heard this, thought it was someone actually honking at me or the actual car horn going off.
- Happens about 80% of the time when engaging the clutch/gear (releasing the clutch pedal) around 4500-5000 RPM.
- Doesn't happen when disengaging or just hitting that engine speed in neutral.
- I was able to reproduce engaging into 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th at those RPM.
- No perceptible drop in performance or RPM related that I could sense.
- Been occurring for last week or so.
-- Could be due to cold, but also could be due to age of vehicle.
- I'm around 4600 miles on the car, had it since May 2012.

I'm going to speak with the dealer about it when I take it in for 5k service - probably next week.
Pretty accurate for me, except I shift lower when not hooning around. I find it honks more when driving easy. It has not gotten any worse since June. I also agree that it's more common when it's cold out (Canada, I'm winter driving it)

I am certainly not dealing with the dealer until they know exactly what the issue is. It's not the gears - it's the clutch or flywheel. Whether it's bad or not, can't say.

Hello everybody,
I'm living in France and I bought a GT86 6 months ago and I have exactly the same problem detailed in the enigmaaron video...

Did you find the problem? and did you fix it?

I will leave my gt86 to the dealer this thursday in order to find a solution...

I guess I have been making cleaner shifts as I haven't noticed it hardly at all lately. Although maybe the colder weather makes a difference but I doubt it. I've kind of concluded that it's just the car telling me I'm slipping the clutch too much.
