The manual has a sport mode!? I think you're confusing it with VSC sport

So... few questions for you experts out there.

When should I shift gears for maximum MPG?
and
Can I use 6th gear on normal(service) roads?

Well, if you want better MPG's... pretty much do the opposite of what you are doing now.

On a serious note, for any given level of acceleration, higher gear/more throttle is more efficient than high revs/less throttle.

Unless you run it on maple syrup like @Tcoat

I hope when Toyota releases the 86s they don't grossly over hype their mpg. These cars are said to get 34mpg, yet I've seen no one get 34mpg. Mustang Camaro, Corvette all get better than that or about the same as these cars with a V8

I get 36!
I am also at constant speed on the highway 98% of my time.
Drive it at the recommended shift points and stay off the gas and you can get the listed mileage. Drive it with any fun and you won't. The same applies for the listed values on the V8s if you lay on that pedal a lot.

I get around 26 MPG city, that's with a 8 mile commute to work never going over 60. If I travel the interstate to work for a 28 mile commute where I cruise @ 80 I get 29ish MPG.

If I strictly work commute (6.2 miles takes about 35-40 minutes) I get 22 mpg.

Mix of work and everything else is about 26 mpg.

If I get past the beltway and get on real highways on a major road trip I get 35mpg.

I drive however I want, but typically in traffic it's 20-50 percent throttle shifting between 4 and 5k, cruising between 2900 and 3400 rpm.

The first two numbers match up with a 98 integra gsr I had. But with the 6th gear in the fr-s the highway is way better, I think I got 28 highway in the gsr, sometimes even less. Cruising hundreds of miles in VTEC yo doesn't get good gas mileage, who would have thought?

Your driving conditions are the most important factor in your fuel economy.

I have literally experienced a 12 mpg tank back to back with a 30 mpg tank.

Edit: Tips, I keep the engine above 2k rpms typically, you can safely run it between 1.5k-2k rpm without issue if you don't try to accelerate out of it by putting your foot to the floor (downshift instead). I usually go to 3rd at 25 mph, 4th at 30mph, 5th at 35, 6th at 45 and I get high to mid 20's in commute traffic both city streets and freeway.

http://www.fuelly.com/car/scion/fr-s...7974/fuelchart

I can actually pinpoint changes in my life and to the car in this graph such as moving cities to reduce commute, girlfriend moving in, changing away from the Michelins to stickier Dunlops, track days, etc.
Need to get me a Fuelly account and see how flat a line I can create! You will be able to see weekends very clearly I am sure!

If I zoom out enough mine is flat (below is my fuel mileage since purchased (@80,000miles).

The interesting part is that the trend line has risen over time.

The in dash average mpg tells me I'm getting 26.3 with mostly stop and go commuting but I have not reset that thing in forever or done the E85 corrections. With E85 at $1.85 a gallon I'm not too worried about MPG

Only 27 to 29 here
Disclaimer in 86s brochure. Drive it with some common sense. LOL

Well my wife could also manage 27 out of the GT where I only got 19 or so

I can set the cruise at 75mph and do my 2 hour each way commute without even touching a pedal for 1 hour and 50 minutes so pretty tough to get better mileage for me.
