Maybe not fooling people on this forum, but the general public have no clue what the car is when it has toyota badges. So yeah, I'd say it's fooling tons of people.

This probably has been mentioned before. Obviously Subaru has more heritage and maturity to its name. But I almost agree with him. I'm in my thirties now and I to almost feel embarrassed about driving a Scion. Even though I still love my car and the BRZ front end is ugly IMHO, I feel I would get a lot more respect simply by bearing the Plieades cluster. Oh well, I'm not going to trade in for a BRZ simply because of the name. BRZ owners be grateful you dont have this problem. I dont know where I'm going with this post. They should have made it a Toyota (in north america) I guess!?
Some people are way too worried about their image. Must be a sign of a serious insecurity issue.

Haha pretty mind-blowing how many people worry about their badge, even when the car underneath is exactly the same (BRZ, FR-S, GT86).

Reminds me of people who buy the stripped-down BMW 328i or Mercedes CLA250, just to have that roundel or chrome MB star on their keychain.

I work in an office where nearly everyone drives a $60-120k BMW, Range Rover, Audi, Porsche, Tesla, etc. On days when I take my Scion in, I get tons of questions about the car and how it is on the track, etc. Most people love the way it looks. It actually gets more positive attention than when I used to take my 987.2 Porsche Boxster S or Subaru STI in.

Moral of the story is, if you like a car, don't let something as silly and meaningless as a badge stop you from buying it. And if you don't like a car, don't let a badge convince you to buy it. In the end, the badge on the hood is meaningless. It's the car underneath that matters.

This is about more than just the badge.
When you buy this car you are buying into a multi-year commitment via the warranty.

Reputation counts for more than just the machinery.

In the US who would you trust more for a piece of machinery: John Deere, Caterpillar or Kubota?

90% of the people in the US just answered "John Deere or Caterpillar".
Why? Quality? No - it's brand name.

Cool then throw a Maserati badge on it so you can really impress people. You might actually fool some of them until they see the interior

You're completely missing the point. There is negative connotation to Scion. When most people think of Scion they think of a company who markets to youths, makes boring fwd cars.

The point of badging it to Toyota is to get away from that stigma, and get more into the Toyota pride. Like the MR2, Supra, AE86, etc.

I bought a BRZ because the Subaru dealership took in my old Subaru and offered me more money for it than the Toyota dealership did. Wouldn't necessarily call myself a Subie fanboy but I like their cars, and I was more worried about the color of the car than the badge.

On a side note, when I wne to the scion dealership the sales person told me the FRS was front wheel drive...

Sadly, this is true on so many levels...and I'm actually an FR-S owner, proud owner & supporter of the brand, but this rings true nonetheless. Although the twins are practically identical, I've been seeing more & more BRZ's being driven on my daily commute up & down the 405 nowadays. I actually had this same exact conversation with a fellow enthusiast yesterday and we were both in agreement that Scion is just trying too hard to portray that young "hip" image...almost as if Scion is it's own worst enemy.

i think he gets the point and is just trying to show you how stupid the point is. in relation to toyota, scion has a negative connotation to some. in relation to maseratti, toyota has a negative connotation to some. the part that really confuses me is that you say that scion is responsible for boring fwd car and imply that somehow, that isnt exactly what toyota has become known for. since the creation of scion i dont think toyota has released a single sports car under the toyota badge. all this badge talk is stupid. no way around it. if you want to change your badge its fine. sports cars are stupid in general and as enthusiasts we do stupid things. dont try to legitimize it though.
