It is pretty much 12MPH is the limit where it tops out based on one of my sons riding with me in the car this weekend and him watching it while we were running some errands.

You can also tie your phone to a ceiling fan, if you are brave enough to watch it spin around. Basically, pretty much anything that looks like slow movement will work. This is similar to wearing a fitbit and just moving your arm back and forth (or rocking in a rocking chair) to get "steps".

I have a nice little cheat to hatch eggs while I'm working. The gps signal in my building seems to be spotty, so my guy never settles in one spot. He just wanders around endlessly, back and forth across the block. If I plug it in and set the screen to stay on, I can flip the phone over so no one sees, and he'll rack up the miles by himself.

Does the screen have to be on to count?

Screen has to be on for it it to count...you could put game on power save mode and flip phone upside down and it will automatically lower brightness of your screen and show Pokemon go logo

Makes sense. I wondered how people dealt with having their phones on so long when they are out walking miles on end to catch pokemon

I do the same thing. Just mount the phone, leave the game running and plugged in and let the game figure out when you're 'walking'. It works well as a map anyways and you can glance at the pokemon tracker on occasion to pre-scope untraveled areas. Maybe grab some loot at a pokestop if you bump into one during a stop light or very slow moving city traffic. Now if only Niantic would have the option to show street names...

As much as I love driving my car, since the release of this game, I find myself parking farther away to my destination and just walking the rest of the way to catch a pokemon or two. Get some exercise and save a bit of fuel.

Just a heads up before someone tries the fan thing and sends their phone flying: It doesn't work unless you have a fan with a large enough diameter to register as movement to the GPS. Hatching the eggs is based purely on the GPS movement of your phone at slow speeds and not steps or fake steps.

EDIT: Putting the phone on a model train track has been shown to work provided again that the track is large enough to register gps movement

Or you tie enough of a string to the fan and your phone to swing it in a big enough arc....like I said if you are brave enough.

You could also hook it to your dog's collar, unless like in my case your dog spends more time sleeping than moving....

or just not play, which is what I do.

walking is definitely the better solution if you can devote the time to it. Personally I have no interest in walking around staring at my phone, not to mention my job is unfortunately tied to a chair about 12 hours a day, with commute.

Hey my commute is walking and I'm a "tech savvy" teenager so why not. Plus nostalgia.
