Still have a soft spot for the ZZ230 Celica and especially First Gen G35's sedan/coupe

1.) What has been your sports car progression?

1971 Dodge Dart -

("sports car"? Wasn't at the time, but I suppose now being RWD with a 318 kind of qualifies it as such. )

1968 SS396 H.O. Chevelle

Very fast in a straight line. In a straight line. Surprisingly not too bad around corners, didn't realize at 17 corners were more fun.

1984 Accord hatchback

Made me realize I didn't really care about 1/4 mile times; I became a musician and liked having something that could move a lot of gear and was reliable. 160,000 miles before it stopped.

1995 Saturn SC2

Better around corners. Massive, horrible mid corner oversteer. Almost like riding a giant unicycle in the rain. Unbelievably crappy Firestone tires. Everything about this car was horribly designed except the plastic body panels. EVERYTHING. Parametric eq with fixed boost for stereo eq??? A GM part number for mud to keep the coolant system from leaking? Told by a GM engineer "all cars should be checked every 1,000 miles for oil leakage". Horrorshow of a car. 3 EGR valves. Throttle body failure. Required 4 tools to get the battery out. Random clutch travel. Ridley Scott level foggy and vague shifting. Wheels must have weighed 30 lbs?

I served penance with this car and was rewarded with...

2000 Celica GT

Zero problems past 180,000 miles (odometer/speedometer stopped working). Fun car. Well behaved handling, didn't feel too FWD-ish. Nice shifting, clutch. Nice steering. Which led me to realize it's spiritual successor was what I needed to get next...

2014 BRZ

Feels like when I got the Celica. Satisfying in all respects, but "more".

For me this car is ideal, it ticks all of the boxes. People that complain about a lack of power just don't know what "power is"; after the Chevelle - small mods, 400+ hp, unless you're drag racing or being an idiot on the street this car doesn't need it. For a daily driver it's a very cultured, thought out experience. Love it.

I just hope I can get 150,000 miles out of it as my Honda and Toyota. I do not see a need to get anything else as long as this car is not giving me any problems.

Goals? I do not know of a more convenient car than this? If a windfall of money happens an SLK/AMG/M ? GT2? Silly to think about.

I just want the car to just be there for 10 years or so as a transparent aspect to my life.

1.) What has been your sports car progression?

95 Mustang > 01 Celica GTS > 91 MR2 >16 FR-S

2.) What are your eventual goals?

I would like to own a super car but I would be happy with the FR-S for the rest of my life.

3.) Where does the FR-S fit in this progression for you?

The FR-S is my first RWD car with a manual transmission*. At this point I'm focused on improving my driving skills to very proficient levels. I want to be able to intuitively drive my FR-S to its limits before I move on to more power.

*I don't count the MR2 since I only drove it a few times before I sold the lemon to a junkyard.

1.) What has been your sports car progression?

- 2000 Honda S2000
- 2005 Honda S2000
- 2017 Subaru BRZ

2.) What are your eventual goals?

I'd really love a GT4...

3.) Where does the BRZ fit in this progression for you?

I think the BRZ is the perfect car for me right now, which is why I obviously purchased it (although I haven't received it... this week!). The S2000 is an incredibly fun car, but after owning one for nearly three years, I felt time for a change. I did a decent amount of modding with the S2000s, but I wanted a platform that I could mostly just leave stock. Thus came the BRZ.

Pic of my S2000, which I still own, but currently reverting to stock to sell.

1.) What has been your sports car progression?

Last 5 "sporty" car purchases have been:

- 2009 Subaru STI (sold)
- 2011 Volkswagen GTI (taken over by wife)
- 2013 Scion FR-S (evolving into track/weekend car)

- 2005 Nissan 350z (sold)
- 2009 Porsche Boxster S (sold)

2.) What are your eventual goals?

Next I'm thinking about picking up one of the following as a DD/occasional track car:

- GT350
- Camaro SS 1LE

3.) Where does the BRZ fit in this progression for you?

Love it - I can't see myself selling it anytime soon. As long as it's running well, it'll be my track/fun car.

At least you wont have to stress about oil consumption issues that the infamous 1zzfe had my 02 Celica had it but gotta admit still ran a champ just needed to remember to add oil lol.

1970 MG Midget, 1967 Camaro SS, ...a bunch of Jeeps in the late 1990s thru 2015..., 2015 BRZ.

Long term, I would like to get back into a classic. Early 911, maybe another little British car, or Alfa Spider. Or if I get back to a job that involves more than the 3 mile commute I have now, maybe a new 911.

The BRZ was a proof of concept test - can I get by with a sports car year round? The answer seems to be yes, especially since I no longer travel a lot as part of my job and I now work and live right on the bus line, should our AWD car not be available during bad weather. I got it not only because I liked it but also in large part because of the back seat, because at the time I carpooled with my wife AND took my dog to the office most days, so a Miata or Cayman wasn't an option.

I had an Integra before, but this FRS is my first true sports car. After, i do want a WRX and a Corvette, but i plan to keep my FRS until it dies, then revive it. There are a lot of great cars out there, and even though a lot can out perform the twins, the problem is that they can't replicate the experience. I'm not about going or showing, i just want something nice, just the experience of something true.

350Z was my first sports car. I got into autocrossing with it about 12 yrs ago and started instructing at our venue about 10yrs ago. (not saying that makes me an awesome driver or anything, just explaining how I have got to experience so many different cars)

There are a lot of nice cars in SW Florida, and I have been lucky enough to drive just about every dream car that has ever crossed my mind. (Many worth more than my house.)

When a friend of mine totaled my Z in May, my wife said I could replace it with whatever I wanted and the Twins were on the short list.

Of all the cars I've driven, a Cayman with a real differential was what I wanted most, but they were not classed well and I wasn't sure what maintenance on a mid-engine car would be like. I was sure however, that the tire budget would be high with that car. The twins were in the number two slot on my favorites list, and the FRS's TRD package was considered "stock" for classing purposes.

If I ever get enough garage space, I would still like to get a good example of a Cayman (or another mid-engine sports car that's available with similar driving dynamics when the time comes) ...and an S2K, and an older Miata, and an E36 M3, and a Z06, and an old but clean 350Z.

I intend to keep the FRS as long as I can get parts to maintain it.

Although I consider my 2017 BRZ my first real sports car. I did have a 78' Datsun 280z which my dad bought and restored for me at the age of 9. I ended up selling the car with the help of my dad and purchased what I thought was the modern equivalent of the classic Z car I had come to love. I guess you can say my dad instilled the love for JDM sports cars at a young age.

1972 914
1973 914 2.0
1974 911s
2003 911 turbo
2012 mx 5
soon to have 2015 FRs

Tired of Porsche and the bills. the Turbo was just too much car to enjoy on the street. The Miata was too girly and rolly but a lot of fun.

The frs is my idea of fun these days. It's all about fun, right?

Yes I wanted one over the FR-S. Love the "S". My mechanic that works on my 911's speaks highly of the reliability. Honestly? When I drove an 86 I just had way too much fun. The Cayman is a more "serious" car however between the extra 15K and insurance and track expenses I just couldn't warrant the extra money when the 86 at this point in life (64) is a better fit with all things considered. I'll always be a Porsche guy however now it's as an "appreciator".
