USA/Canada have the audio controls standard, yup. I don't have a Japan-spec updated catalog yet, but I would also bet the blank covers would fit just fine if you wanted to ditch the audio controls.

Do you have any info on the trim for US or Canada (e.g., auto HVAC)? It appears for 2017, the 86 will be monospec.

After that video, cannot unsee the fugu kuchi on the new 86.

Really happy I went for one of the last FR-S.

I've had the opposite reaction to these videos. I actually like the new front better than the old one now.

Suffice it to say, the guys at Toyota got a lot of insight from the 'Ring."

Toyota and Subaru have been using this race to test their leading edge stuff since the late 2000s so I'm not surprised. This is the race where Subaru field tested their newer chassis and suspension tuning theories, and Toyota with the LFA before it went to production.

Interesting the new steering wheel is 3.05mm smaller in diameter.

The front end doesn't look as bad in those recent videos, but damn do those 86 badges on the steering wheel and fender look like tacked on afterthoughts...

We will not be getting the auto HVAC or smart key. The 2017 86 is still the same grade level as the FR-S was.

I think I read an article that says 2018 MY is when Toyota will consider moving away from the monospec models.

What's interesting about this is it is no longer posted in the FAQ. In post 1295 I quoted the FAQ as having this information in it.

Quote:
Q: Will Toyota dealers still be using Pure Price and Pure Process Plus?

A: For MY17, the iA, iM and FR-S will remain monospec and a single price. After that, we will evaluate how pricing for those vehicles as Toyotas will be carried out. Regarding Pure Process Plus, it’s specific to Scion so it won’t be available at Toyota dealers.
If you go to the FAQ that is no longer posted there. Probably means nothing, but odd they would remove it.

I have seen it mentioned in articles as well though.

To me this would be good news. Scion was tough to negotiate pricing with. Toyota will be a lot easier. That should force prices even lower for base trim levels. Personally, I'd rather have a low end trim. Better to put the money into go-fast parts than stuff like dual zone climate in a tiny car that doesn't need it, or push button starting that is actually slower to get the car moving than using a physical key. That's just me though.

Honestly I'd rather have the high end model with all the creature comforts. Simply because I daily mine. Otherwise, if it was just a track car, then yeah bare bones would be the way to go.
