FS(CA): frs cluster (read description) $75

$75

This is a cluster that I purchased on ebay and modified in minor ways to make work for a project of mine (Replace the speedo with a dual needle oil temp/oil pressure gauge. If you are interest in that I can give you all the details, code, etc.).

It is not guaranteed to work. I suspect it will, but I have never tested it. I own a brz and I'm in the process of selling it.

Here are the ways I have tinkered with it:
-Desoldered the stepper motor for the speedo. I have since soldered it back. The excess flux is subaru/denso's doing and not my mess. The contacts should be good.
-Disassembled and reassembled everything several times.
-Increased the hole size (by about 1 mm) where the shaft of the stepper comes through the pcb. This did not affect the contacts or lighting in any way. I had to do this to accommodate the specialized stepper motor with two shafts for two needles for my project.
-Cut the shaft off the speedo needle (needed to add a 3d printed shaft to fit the stepper from the project). I have since reglued the shaft to the needle.

Why you might buy this:
-ECU hacking
-Parts for something messed up on yours
-Making a racing sim setup
-Picking up where I left off from my project
-A last ditch effort to replace your speedo on your project.
-To build a clock in
-To hang as decoration in your house/shop/garage/workplace.

Just curious... I'm working on a project involving the cluster also.. Did you ever try to start the car without the cluster plugged in?

I'm making a wire harness extension to relocate the speedo to the glove box, so I can use my Racepak, which has been molded to the cluster housing... I've just always been curious on whether or not the car will run right or at all without the cluster not being plugged in.. I've heard people say it won't because the ecu will prevent the car from running correctly for safety reasons...

Sorry I never tried that. I only ever worked with this spare off the car.

I'd be really curious to see how your project goes though.

Free bump

By any chance do either of you have a nice clear shot of the back of the PCB where the main loom connects to the cluster?

You are correct, the car won't start without the cluster because it's part of the immobilizer system. Wouldn't it be easier/cleaner to feed the factory harness back a bit and stash the old cluster behind the dash?

still for sale....still sitting in the garage.

Make a deal. Trade me something interesting (just got an xbox one...do you have a raspberry pi or arduino you don't want...etc.)

This could be great for a racing sim setup
