That's called good acting and memorizing a brochure, he doesn't know jack about cars. Listen to any of his interviews, they're terrible. I'll give him this though, he's good at BSing.

His job was to sell more Scions, improve the bottom-line, and promote the brand to the youth. Knowing technical details about a specific car is not a VP's job.

Akio Toyoda-san would beg to differ, given how he does things.

he's not an engineer, how else do you expect him to know about the product beside memorization? doing well with interviews requires a different set of skills. he's no steve jobs i give you that but i have talked to the guy in person, and he "gets it", the ideas behind the FRS.

i'm not vouching for the guy or anything but be fair what job don't you have to sell and pretend to be some image a little? Except President. oh wait.

He didn't seem that bad to me. Besides that, you guys do realize he's been with Toyota since like 92 and didn't just appear out of no where with the Scion brand so I'm sure he's some what knowledgable with these cars.

Have you not seen anything Toyoda-san does? He's been in 24 hour nurburgring races in both the 86 and LFA, he personally tested the 86 during development and gave direct input during it's creation. He even had new recruits to Toyota show up to a race track, where he was lapping in an LFA, pulled up to them and and hopped out. Told them if they don't like cars, they shouldn't be there. I'm trying to find the article where this was witnessed but it was from a few years back, if I find it, I'll link it.

If he truly did "get it" he would have left the car named 86, not changed 86 logos to Scion and left it with Toyota. Since this car was meant to revitalize Toyota's passion, not keep Scion a float a bit longer.

As for the "he's not an engineer" comment, I point to what I said about Toyoda-san in this post. That's how I expect him to know about his products, the same way his President and CEO does.

Jack, we are going to miss you. You were good with Scion, hopefully they will merge Scion back into Toyota in the near future.

I doubt he got to make that call between gt86 and frs. the people who made that call had got to be on the Toyota side. they made it because it makes sense for both Toyota and Scion, I won't get into that here. From the consumer side, just like you I'd love to have the car branded as gt86 but at the same time I think Toyota cars are overpriced so I'm glad I save some money in MSRP of the FRS, maintenance and replacement parts.

Back to Toyoda-san, he's like Vladimir Putin (not as ex leader of Russia, as a guy), he's a born badass and he has the mean to do so. Jack is employed by a car company to represent and market the brand not show up at races and such, for that they have Ken Gushi.

I really, really doubt he had any say in the matter. Regardless, if he did, his primary objective would be to further the Scion brand, in which case, having the 86 / FRS under that banner would further that objective.

Not trying to argue, but Finance calls a heck of a lot more shots than does Marketing.
