people who are actively against verts confuse me. i understand that you might rather have power but the existence of a convertible model doesnt change the one you have in any way. i would imagine a drop top would increase sales more than a more powerful version

As others have mentioned, you give up a significant amount of stiffness due to the lack of a rigid roof structure. The only way to recover some stiffness is to add reinforcements elsewhere and then it becomes very difficult to restore the original stiffness of the coupe without adding lots of weight or using expensive composites.

I understand that but I don't know what case you're trying to make

The thread is titled "Would YOU rather have..."

There's going to be a lot of people explaining why THEY don't want a convertible. Agreed it has no bearing on whether Toyobaru put the resources in, it will never decrease the enjoyment I get from my car and in the end it doesn't really matter. It's a post about personal opinions, you're going to get personal opinions.

If i wanted more power, i'd go with a WRX or EVO.
If i wanted a convertible, i'd go with BMW 325i convertible.

I think the car is perfect as it is with enough power at an amazing price point. Putting more power will also increase the costs and the price point.

But if i absolutely HAD TO choose one, i guess it'd be power. But not from a turbo charger. Maybe a 2.5 or 3 liter engine option. Just enough to squeeze another 50-100 hp

Hands down power.

Convertible just sacrifices a lot - I know the roof was already designed to be gutted off for a convertible according to Tada-san but still. I don't want this car to change.

thats a good point. i just kinda figured people who already owned one of these cars were coming from a perspective of already owning the car.

What is typical maintenance for a convertible? Cleaning rubber seals and checking for nicks/tears?

One benefit to owning a convertible is that it will retain its value longer as they tend to be more collectible. I still want a removable carbon fiber pagoda targa top with a spare glass top in the trunk.

both of my convertibles were purchased after they were at least 8 years old, so i ended up replacing both the convertible tops due to the age($1200 each), and at that age, all the rubber seals for the top/window interface start to shrink, so random water leaks appear in every rain. there's supposed to be some silicone lubricant you can wipe all the seals down with to make them swell and prevent some of the leaks.. but i've heard conflicting reports that some of the types of silicone lube can detrimentally affect the rubber and make it deteriorate even faster, so i just dealt with all the small leaks..

that might hold true to some cars, but not to the 2 i owned.. a 94 lebaron, and a 01 v6 eclipse.. the eclipse had lower resale value simply because of the v6.. and the lebaron, maybe it was just age, or maybe it was part of it being a k-car deriviative, but it was never worth more then $2400 when i had it, which was in-line with other cars of that same year--i think i bought it when it was 11 years old...

The canvas top was one of the main reasons I got rid of my S2000. Holes appeared on both sides where it creased, water dripped down on me after getting in the car and closing the door after it rained, the rear window cracked at the bottom (AP1, prior to glass rear), and the car was ugly with the top up. Mind you, I had the top down all the time so i got good use out of it, but it is an annoying and extensive thing to maintain. Plus having to worry about the top being slashed by dbags. I will never buy a canvas top again, but I would consider a hardtop convertible.

More power, but not in the KERS system that I foresee Toyota to opt for. Prius and all.

Actually, I forgot about the FR-S, I bought in 2013. But I logged on to this website and read the comments about "more horse power" got me motivated to see for myself. What's all the fuse? I like the way the car feels and handle. I purchased a different exhaust and rims/tires it fun and exciting. My opinion if I want more power then I just buy another sport car, e.g.,Lexus RC F it has more horse power but I will keep the FR-S too. Rich Guy
