Flywheel Rattle?
Under very light braking, or just coasting down the hill in neutral, there is a quite loud rattle coming somewhere from the transmission area and it continues for 2-3 seconds. If clutch pedal goes down then rattling stops instantly. It sounds to me like the flywheel rattle I've had on Mini few years back (it did rattle at idle tho).
Car is doing it from the very beginning and I have around 500 miles on odo now. Anyone experience it? |

I have a different rattle, if I push in the clutch quickly when cold it makes an awful chatter. Weird though, it only happens when cold and goes away quick.
I only notice because my parking space is in the middle of the block so I start the car, drive to the corner in first gear getting up to 15 mph max, then clutch in and brake for stop sign. Chatters everyday in this spot but not in stop go driving, weird. |

Very interesting! Would you be able to elaborate more? I'm very new to DI and curious to know.
Lee: I had no idea what it could be, I totally thought it was a flywheel/driveshaft noise

When I picked the car up from the dealer, they gave me a piece of paper explaining certain things and DI noise was one of them. I threw away the paper, so I don't know how it explained. But the noise in the vid is the noise that paper talked about saying its normal noise.

First off, love the way the car drives except for this one "grinding" or "rattling - gear grinding type" sound that happens exactly as you described and in your vid.
It sort of sound like the sound made when you're trying to put your car into gear without using the clutch. After driving for over 1000 miles, I can usually make this sound happen under the following conditions: 1) When slowing down for a stop or turn, put your car into neutral - so your coasting down. 2) When slowing down in neutral, the revs will usually settle in around 1000 rpm or so until you get down to below 25mph or slower. Then the revs will finally settle in to 700 or so...then the revs will bounce down lower to 550 to or 650 rpm and that is when I hear the rattling sound. 3) Like you, I also can make the rattling stop if I push in the clutch, or, if I bring the revs up via the throttle - the sound goes away. Or, if I do nothing, it will slowly stop in about 2 or 3 or 4 seconds - once the engine revs recovers. 4) No matter how hard I try to duplicate the sound with the car NOT moving, it will not happen. The car needs to be moving in neutral to make the sound come out. 5) To me, it sounds like something in the transmission is rattling, whether gears or rods or whatever. Could it be the motor knocking at that low rpm - I hope not. We gotta get this resolved... Thanks. Last edited by 3essess; 07-23-2012 at 11:51 PM. |

Well, I think I'll take it back to the dealership for the answer.

I'm also thinking it could be some sort of harmonic vibration due to the low engine revs and the clutch being out and the transmission still spinning while moving at certain speed. I think ultimately, if the revs never bounce that low, it would not make the sound. IOW, fix the low idle issue, you don't get this rattle?
