I had this choice... 370z vs a FRS/BRZ....
I chose the FRS because the FRS has the smaller 2.0 engine, which means gas savings. I drive 13,000 miles per year and any savings help. I also preferred the styling of the FRS over the 370z, I wanted something that stood out, something that not a lot of people had. There are just so many 350z and 370z driving around in my area. Funny thing, the insurance of my brand new 2013 Sports car was cheaper than the insurance of the 2011 Nissan Altima. I have no idea why. So insurance is cheaper on the FRS, but only by a little bit. Another reason was because I enjoyed (past tense), the service at my Toyota Dealer and I've purchased many many toyotas from this dealer in the past. I knew I would be taken care of if I had any issues with the car. I wanted something reliable, and Nissan's aren't known exactly to be reliable. I had a Nissan and it had quirky electrical issues. I had a MY 10-12 Nissan Altima and it was plagued with electrical issues and other issues. Fit and finish was terrible for a 30k Sedan. All warranty issues had to be fought with my Nissan Dealer(S). I was turned away for warranty work and was told "oh, this is normal". I knew if I bought another Nissan, I would have the same service and I didn't want a repeat. The fit and finish of the 370z was not great for a 30k sports car, I understand I'm not buying a luxury car, but I expected a little bit more. The 370z was fun flooring and passing on the high way, but I knew this fun was going to be expensive and would put a hamper on my Maserati, Masters Degree, and House fund. TL; DR -- Nissan is known for poor electrical issues/service, FRS cheaper insurance, save on gas, and made me stand out in the crowd.

The insurance is less on my FRS than on my tC as well. Then insurance agent figured it was probably because the FRS has more safety features than my tC.

Honestly you can't go wrong with either car. I expect insurance to be cheaper on the frs.
I see like 10 frs/brz's for every one 370. I also live in socal. There's plenty of 350s though |

I've owned both, I sold my 09 370Z manual and brought a 14 GTS 86 automatic.
Due to an injury I couldn't drive the manual any more. I've always been a big Z fan and jumping into an 86 was a bit different. The Z has way more power and is a lot heavier, losing you licence is pretty easy. They handle great but the ride is rough. The 86 is nimble and light and ride is very good even if you have been driving for 5hrs strait, after a couple of hours in a Z you know exactly how long you've been driving for. I do miss the Bose sound system at the Nav system they where great. The 86 sound system is ok but the Nav is........... Interesting. Which one is better? That's really hard. The finish in the Z is a little better, but if you mod the car Toyota parts are so much cheaper. Here in Australia the Z is nearly twice the price of an 86 and I really don't think there is that much difference. Do miss the power, yes and no. When the 86 was new and the engine was tight, yes I hated it. No power and lots of noise. After 5k K's its worn in a bit, revs better, the car is a lot lighter so I don't miss is as much. They best advice I can give is go for a good test drive in both, on highways and back roads. Drive for a hour or so then get out and walk around a bit to see how you feel. |

The 370z would be cheaper and faster in the long run between the two. If you feel it's not handling as well, new suspension parts are much cheaper than forced induction, and you'll still have 90% of your warranty. It'll still be as fast or faster than most super/turbocharged gt86's.
But, I didn't really enjoy the 370 I drove as much as the few times I've been in an 86. I absolutely love Z's, but the 86 is the better "fun" car to me. It reminded me of my own z after I had it all upgraded. Plus 18mpg on premium in a 20 gallon tank gets painful. Trust me, I know. Plus your insurance will be higher on the Z. Dollar to dollar I think the monogram is a poor value though. I'd either go base FR-S or brz limited which you can haggle price on. A (lightly) used 370z would be better bang for buck, but costs more in the long run. Your choice, you may love the Z, that's why they have test drives ! |
