Essex/AP Racing Sprint Kit proven in endurance racing by Toyota engineers

Hey Guys,

I wanted to share a post we just published on our Essex Blog. We've heard some chatter by competitors over the years about what our Essex Designed AP Racing Sprint Brake Kit can't do: "It's too small/lightweight, you need a rear kit, the discs won't last, etc." We're here to tell you again that is pure nonsense. A group of Toyota engineers from their Arizona proving grounds contacted us last summer about helping with the brakes on their 86 racecar. They installed and pummeled our Sprint Kit in the NASA Western Endurance Racing Championship, in which a typical race would be four hours long. They were even on track to run the entire 25 Hours of Thunderhill on one set of pads, but an unfortunate failure (unrelated to brakes) ended their race early. They sealed up the 2018 championship with our kit, and provided some great feedback along the way.

"I’d like to start by saying thank you and Essex/AP Racing for your extremely generous and strong support of our team. The Sprint Kit was a game changer in terms of getting the high quality aftermarket braking capacity we were looking for. Our team is reaching new peaks for; team participation and engagement, on track performance, race wins, preparation, and professional appearance for the car and crew. Essex’s/AP Racing’s support directly and indirectly contributes to all of these areas, and we can’t thank you enough.

Technical Feedback on AP Sprint Kit

Technical Feedback on AP Sprint Kit The AP Sprint Kit has worked flawlessly since we installed it prior to Sonoma. I’ll admit to having pretty high expectations for the AP kit prior to the event, and we were not disappointed in any way! Everything worked exactly as it should, no integration issues with the ABS, and front/rear balance was very nice. Also appreciated the solid and very consistent pedal, definitely has significantly improved feedback over the stock calipers. Brake pad wear has also been greatly improved, I’d safely estimate 100% increase in pad wear rate over the same compound with stock brakes. Phenomenal! While we did prepare for a brake bad change during the 25hr, all indications were that it was not going to be necessary. This is exactly the type of performance and durability improvement we were hoping for when we chose to go with Essex/AP Racing. We’re looking to continue try and find the limit of the system in 2019! Please enjoy some photos from the weekend below, and feel free to follow us on Instagram @tapgmotorsports. Thank you!"

Cool! A couple questions though, are they just running stock oem rotors in the rear? Also how are they fitting RPF1s over the Sprint kit, I thought they had insufficient clearance?

To our knowledge, yes they are just running OEM rear discs. There are at least six different variants of the RPF1 fit over our Sprint Kit without a spacer (bold red below). Wheel fitment data from our website:

Confirmed wheels that fit our Essex/AP Sprint Kit without a spacer:
The wheels below will fit with a spacer of the specified thickness:
  • 2013+ USDM OEM BRZ or FR-S front wheels, 10mm spacer
  • OEM NZDM Gt86 (by enkei)16x6.5 +48, needs at least 8mm spacer
  • BBS RK 17x7 +48, needs 10mm spacer
  • SSR type-c 16x7 +48, needs 5mm spacer
  • Volk Racing TE37 18x7.5 +48, needs 5mm spacer
  • Volk TE37 17x7.5 +48, needs 3mm spacer
  • Watanabe Needs15x6 +35, needs 25mm spacer
How to use the wheel fitment template:
