Is it wrong that at (a possible) 4.0L displacement I'd like it to be a V8?

Whatever it ends up being, I'm sure it'll disappoint. Nissan isn't exactly doing super great right now. Executives getting axed, power struggle with Renault, aging cars, and Infiniti is ready to fall off into the abyss.

I can't imagine there are many available resources to invest into a new sports car between them trying to take Infiniti full electric and refreshing the entire Nissan lineup during the next couple of years.

IMHO, Nissan needs to reboot the Z and return it to it's roots, making it look like a modern version of the 240,260 or 280.

Or better yet, bring back and produce the MID4!!

... Especially if they put an NA 4.0L V8 in the thing. I have an unreasonable and unexplained obsession with tiny displacement, high cylinder engines. Never been able to explain it, but I deeply want a V8 that is 4.0 or less. Bonus points for ITBs. All my money, and I'd kill someone for a tiny V8 with ITBs...

For practical reasons and to meet regulations, I think it would have to be closer to the 280, at least in size. The pedestrian hood requirements alone would make the 240 almost impossible.

I guess that would be okay... I've never cared for the longer body of the 280, but if it was skinnier than the 350/370 I would be happy.

A good buddy of mine bought a low-miles, single-owner SC400 about ten years ago. Burgundy-over-beige leather. That engine had a fairly unique sound and the car was quick. I too would be interested in another small-displacement V8 in a modern Japanese sports/touring car. I wouldn't BUY one but I know at least two people who probably would if it was made in Japan, cost less than $50k, and be available with a decent manual or automatic gearbox. (No CVTs) After that the same buddy had an E63 AMG with the 6.3 (6.2) V8 engine. It sounded incredible but my buddy never really warmed up to it like he did the SC400.

I'd rather they came out with a new 4cyl 200-250Z than an 8cyl 400Z, honestly (and I drove a 6.8 liter LS3 FD for while). A car the size/weight of the FT86 but a cab-rearward 2-seater on a shorter wheelbase for 50/50 distribution. 8200+rpm 2.5 liter should be good for upwards of 300hp, weight could be FT86ish or less.

E90/E92 M3! Bit of a porker though...

240Z 260Z and 280Z were the same S30 chassis, exactly the same size except for the enormo bumpers on the '74 1/2 260Z and 280Z.

Of course not. Hell, why not V10? More and more $$,$$$ of course. And size and weight...

The 2-seat 260 and 280Zs did not have a longer body. The 2+2 260Z and 280Z models did, with a longer wheelbase and unfortunately crooked roofline. They shoulda gone shooting-brake stylee!

Didn't realize that, and I was comparing them in my head from memory. the 280 sure looked bigger in my head (maybe bulkier is a better word)

EDIT: Maybe I was thinking of the 4 seater 280. I didn't realize they had a 2. I was an admirer from afar as they were way out of my price range when new.

Hard to see it go turbo from the get go, it would cannibalize a lot of wrx sales.

The WRX and 86/BRZ would still be VERY different cars even if they have the same motor. But I don’t think that will ever happen anyway.
The WRX is great, I love them, but it will always feel like a hopped up sedan, not a low slung sports car.

https://www.motortrend.com/news/next...ing-2020-400z/

I'm wondering if they will go after the Mustang and Challenger with the next car, especially with the comments about it being possible to target higher volumes. In base form, with a usable back seat and the VC-Turbo motor for around $30K, it could do well.

And Nissan as a company is in trouble, so they might swing for the fences. A badass new Z and Skyline GTR would be amazing. I don’t ever want to see Nissan go away.

There was a 2+2 280Z, but there was also the later 280ZX.
You're not alone however, it seems most people seem to think the 280Z was bigger than the 240Z.
You can see from mine however, that not only is it the same size, but almost every part is interchangeable between a 280Z and 240Z. (Mine has 240Z suspension, grille, bumper, and hatch. The only major changes besides the bumpers and engine were the trunk floor and rear taillights and trim)
Before (full 280Z spec)

After (240Z partial conversion)

I just read an article that they are dropping the Datsun name for the second time since the whole economy car idea didn't work out for them in the markets where they tried it. Maybe they should revive it with the aforementioned reboot of the 240Z and make it their sports car brand.

You were either looking at a 2+2 or a 280ZX. Here's a good look at profiles of:
S30 240Z 2-seater (the only model), S30 260Z 2+2 (280Z 2+2 similar), S30 280Z 2-seater (maybe w/ smaller non-US bumpers?), S130 280ZX 2-seater (new and different chassis), and Z30 300ZX 2-seater.

Note: 2+2 was available from S30 260Z through Z32 (90s) 300ZX, and of course all those were available as shorter-wheelbase 2-seaters. The Z33 2+2 is the G35 coupe...
