In our 70's we like our comfort and dislike the jarring and jiggly ride. After riding in a Skoda Aptiva I realised it is possible to have comfort and good handling with minimal body roll so investigated. I was thinking of different springs +/or dampers. Someone suggested a gel-cushion.

I trialled a couple of gel cushions and one does exactly what I wanted. The jarring and jiggly ride now feels nicely damped so much so that I think everyone could give it a try. All it cost was $20 Australian and I know I could have spent a heap on spring/damper experimentation and maybe never have got it to feel right. I reckon the o.e. seats could have been tuned by the makers to much better match the suspension. The feeling I get is that the wheels are more stuck on the road (even though the suspension is the same) and I am inclined to throw the car around more.
The tradeoff is a feeling of being perched up on the seat rather than down in it and not located by it as much resulting in a a slight feeling of wallowing and body roll which you would expect. I have lowered the seat to the max to compensate and got used to it quickly. Previously I had the seat raised about 40mm.
The cushion is 430 X 330 X 60 mm and quite heavy due to a generous bag of gel inside a cover of quite soft 30 mm foam both top and bottom and around the sides. It is not memory foam. My feeling is that is the gel that is doing most of the work. Maybe using just the bag in the seat would do the trick. Widthwise it is a perfect snug fit between the side bolsters but I have trimmed the foam to fit back between the seat-back bolsters. I made an hollow for the wedding tackle too and trimmed foam off the front as it pressed on the back of my thighs up by the knees. At $20 I can afford experimenting.

I had the oil out in bright sunlight when I noticed it. It did not show on the dipstick. The particles did not clump or settle out in the drain pan. I was surprised how they got through the filter.

What the particles were remains a mystery to this day. I sought answers at the time and no-one on the forums could explain.

That was 5 years ago and at 50,000Km the car uses no oil between changes.

If this has prompted you to check your oil at a very low mileage too I'd love to hear if you get the same result and especially if you inspect under a microscope or have a sample analysed. I regret that I did not do that.

I read how the torsen diff oil gets lots of crap on the magnetic drain plug so I changed it at low mileage twice. Once to flush and left the second in. "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" as the saying goes.

Why do you think they made it through the filter? You pulled them out upstream of the filter. When the engines are first run, the moving parts bed in and those tiny specs of metal have to go somewhere. The sump is where they go and the filter prevents them from routing back to the bearings.

We finally got a warm day here. I took it for a long drive after work and then retorqued all the nuts I messed with, including the lug nuts.

I found a top strut mount nut completely loose! I guess I missed one...
