Where do you guys mount the mic to get optimum sound (i.e. not just wind whooshing)?

Also - for those using the Hero 3+ WHite or Silver editions, any thoughts?
Should I just spend the extra on the Black edition?

I did a little experiment that ended with my external mic melting when it was clipped in the exhaust tip. I've had it inside the stock airbox and at different places around the back and in the trunk. The best thing I've found is right in the middle if the cabin. If nothing else, using the waterproof case will cut down on wind noise.

This one actually uses audio from my phone mounted on the dash (and pointing at me obviously)

Anyone tried sticking it in the soundgenerator hole in the passenger footwell?
I don't have a gopro yet (planning to get one soon with external mic), but that seems like it might fly?

Would it be OK to install a tension rod (for bathroom curtains) against the two rear triangle windows, then mount the gopro in the center? Would this damage the windows especially during turns?

Hi All,

I'm currently using the back windshield which i think is the optimum viewing angle for capturing a centred view through the windshield and showing driver inputs, but i was never happy with the distance when using gopro wide FOV. I did a bunch of research on ways to extend the mount forward with adapters and other means but it was going to be expensive and fiddly.

What i did find out though is that switching the FOV to medium and narrow will zoom with no loss in image quality or framerate and increase the windshield viewable area significantly. I was under the misconception it was similar to digital zoom, but apparently it's not. Thank you gopro!
heres my source for this:

I have not tested this with the gopro yet, but i did a crop of my previous footage to show the difference in viewing angle. See the 3 images below showing 1080p wide, medium and narrow respectively, centred to the windshield to allow for spot metering. These framed crops should be accurate to how the gopro frames the different modes. The cropped medium and narrow are blurry because of my edit, the gopro raw will still be full resolution. Also ignored the dotted lines, look at where the edge of the image is

You can see the difference below:
-the original wide footage has lots of wasted space around the windshield
-medium is better, and you can still see the shift knob and driver arms
-narrow is maybe too close because you can't see side windows, and it crops the shift knob and only see steering wheel and hands

Hopefully this helps others, don't be afraid to use the medium setting as you won't lose resolution or image quality!

+1 for mounting in the rear windshield facing forward. You can see the track, you can see the driver inputs (aside from feet maybe) and the sound is the best around that location (at least for a non gutted car, I dont know how much taking the interior out would change this).

Headrest mount gives you a closer view and doesn't block the view out the back window. This one is surprisingly well made: http://amzn.to/2mdbxwM

No. That's a safety issue.

I did the same, but for exponentially cheaper with a short piece of square aluminum tubing and a pair of U-bolts. I mount it to both posts on the drivers seat. I'll throw up a picture when I have a chance.

I used this mount on the headrest for a long time with great results. It's cheaper than the option above and mounts to both head rest poles, which should be more stable. https://www.amazon.com/ChargerCity-T...st+mount+gopro
