McLaren 720S vs Mazda MX-5: Which is the most fun?

Really interesting read

It's not as detailed as I would've hoped but it does deliver a message and food for thought.

It's very relevant to the FT86 as it has the same design principles as the MX-5

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/f...which-most-fun

I won't spoil the results right here in the opening post but the results are something worth reading and considering carefully.

Right now, I'm honestly torn about this so I would love to hear other people's opinions

I find myself looking at a lot of Corvette videos these days

In 2001 I went to the UK to drive a Ferrari 360 Modena around Thruxton. 8 laps, 140mph, awesome sound.
But it turned out I enjoyed flogging the 90hp Peugeot rental around twisty mountain roads more than driving a Ferrari around a racetrack.

A car enthusiast who can afford a McLaren will buy a McLaren. One who can afford a Mazda will buy a Mazda. The difference is that the McLaren driver wont be comparing his car to a mazda.

I don't agree with this at all. Unless the Mclaren driver is a very short sighted individual who bought the Mclaren more to cover up his insecurity issues rather than to add fun into their life.

I honestly think I would have more fun in a Ferrari on a track than a Peugeot on a twisty mountain trail but then again I never drove a Ferrari period LOL so I'm in no position to make a statement.

If I had money to buy a McLaren, I'd rather spend it racing spec Miata.

Although I'm digging spec racer Ford lately, higher initial buy in, fewer hidden costs to running up front like $12k motors that make 2hp more than the $10k motor that makes 2hp more than the junkyard motor.

Yes, I know it doesn't apply to all owners.

People do not always buy the best car they can afford. Those with money buy what they want. Sometimes that's just a Jeep.

I'm sure a McLaren is a ton of fun. They do look kind of douchey though, at least in person.

Ive driven a Ferrari F430. My BRZ is better. It doesn’t have as good a ride or as good a sound or as refined a power band, but the power is more than enough for most the time, and the proportions and handling are much better in the BRZ; it is sized perfect for me. I enjoyed the experience, but the Ferrari didn’t feel like 10x the value of my car, and I was left appreciating my car that much more.

Ok. I got to take three cars on a driving experience on the country canyons and on the roads/highways of Napa County:

The Ferrari’s build quality didn’t feel top notch or very luxury. Our Q5 is better made. It felt like they just placed things in different spots too like an econobox from Honda or Toyota would have smarter or more ergonomically placed controls. The carbon fiber didn’t look much different than some add-on pieces from an aftermarket. I tend to like smaller vehicles so the added girth wasn’t enjoyed. I didn’t care for the dual clutch, especially in first gear; it wasn’t easy to engage from a stop.

The Lamborghini Gallardo I drove wasn’t worth the price either. The leather stitched interior was underwhelming. The sound was muted. The seats were stiffer and less comfortable by far than the BRZ. The visibility was terrible, and it felt large.

The Aston Martin Vantage DB9 Volante/convertible I drove felt like a boat. It weighed a lot and was huge. It felt horrible through the canyons with massive understeer and body roll. The 6.0L V12 felt butter smooth, but it too had a muted tone.

I’m sure a Porsche GT3/4 or Lotus would be a better fit for me than the cars I drove, and maybe the design would be more impressive to warrant the price tag. Let me say it this way, if the price of the cars and replacement parts/maintenance were the same compared to my BRZ, I would still prefer my BRZ over all of them. The Ferrari, because of the sound and active suspension, would be a close second. If it was a stick then still behind, but a closer second.
