My guess is the one that came with the car was defective and whatever material they used for it just wore through quickly. My car was one of the first 2017's and they changed the steering wheel with that MY. So I'm just going to assume that's the case.
Seems to be some dispute on the material used in the first run of the new wheel. Some say it is fine but other that it is slippery as hell. The one I test drove was like trying to hold onto a baby oiled boa. I hated it.

My '13 wheel's texture/finish leaves something to be desired as well. It's still easy to grip on to, but visually it looks pretty bad especially with some wear on it. It's obviously just cheap plastic designed to look like perforated leather.

But yeah, I guess it's part of the allure of the first model year and all of it's little quirks.

Yeah, makes me wonder if they just didn't do a great QA job on the new wheel/didn't meet the deadline for the release of the new MY, but you know better than me just yanking stuff out of my behind.

It's been noticeably bad since last year but for whatever reason I didn't think to ask if it could be replaced till now. Should've done this a while ago..

I was actually about to buy a Japanese company's steering wheel that has real perforated leather and a bit of a flat, D-shape on the bottom. But I suppose for now I'll hold off since this is much better.

Agreed. So happy to have the early steering wheel. Love it.

I like not having the steering wheel controls, that's for sure. Because racecar.

It's the same as my '15, right? I don't remember yours being different. I love mine.

I wish I had felt Spike's first wheel.

They changed the cover after the first or second MY. There was something wrong with the chemistry of the top coat. Got really sticky in the heat for the first couple years. They blistered too.

The wheel controls on my wife's car require you to have super long fingers to even attempt to use the cruise.

I have to take my eyes off the road and one hand off the wheel just to set it. Sort of defeats the purpose. I love my old school stalk cruise where I can just extend one finger and there it is.

Sometimes they're nice to have.

But then when I'm actually driving for fun on the road or when I was on the track I'd accidentally hit like the voice control or "mode" buttons and suddenly the speakers would be blasting about what command I want or switching to the radio.

I've never used the cruise control. Detracts from the driving experience and promotes inattentive driving.
