Toyobaru has the opportunity to maintain the advantage of primacy and recency while they wait on competitors to figure out wth they want to do.

I don't disagree the Toyobaru relationship has been icy at best. But I don't think they will allow pride to get in the way of relatively sound business decisions. The 86 is likely locked in for another 3 years which is probably when the new cars would be out.
I agreed you. Recently, Toyota has kept their sports cars around for long time.

MK4 Supra: 1993-2002
W20 MR-2: 1989-1999
W30 MR-2: 2000-2007
SC300/SC400: 1991-2000
SC430: 2001-2010
6th gen Ceilca: 1994-1999
7th gen Ceilca: 2000-2006

Even their bread and butter models (Camry, Rav4, Highlander and ect) have a 5-6 cycle. I'm thinking a niche product like the FR-S have even stay around for 8 years if not longer.

Hmm, people in Detroit standing around gawking at the C7 and not the FT1? Shocker considering it's the capital of 'Fuck Japan' maybe soon to be replaced by Beijing.

I've been in and around the C7 many times now and no way would I ever gawk at the C7 over the FT1 purely on looks alone. Though I don't work for UAW so there's that. The minute the C7 came out, I was ready for the face lift.

now I could see people cross shop between the C7 & FT1 with the M4, SR5, C63 AMG and RCF. but not with those little 3 roadster you posted.

by your own words that would mean the Z4 takes sales from the 4 series/M4. TT takes sales from the A5/S5/SR5 and ect.

look at it this way. back in 90s I just did not see people cross shopping between the MK4 Supra and SC300/400. one is a sports car while the other is a luxury coupe.
Since when is 4wd "fail wheel drive"? It's arguably superior to RWD in nearly every way, if implemented properly. I would agree that most models of the TT aren't really sufficiently good to be competitors to the FT1 (at least based on what we know so far), but the TT-RS makes a viable competitor (though sadly, you can't get it anymore).

As for the Z4, it wouldn't surprise me if some people cross shop it with the 4 series. It's really the better choice if you don't need the rear seat and want a convertible. It's lighter, more agile, and it certainly isn't down on power (the Z4 35is is 335hp). As for the SLK, the AMG model is 415 horsepower. I don't see how that is a "less powerful" roadster - that's pretty normal for the group I mentioned, and quite a bit more than some of the cars in that category.

Now, I will admit that some of the cars I mentioned are closer to GT cars than pure sports cars (particularly cars like the RS5, M4, etc), but at the same time, some of the cars I mentioned are more like pure sports cars than the FT1 (Cayman, SLK55 AMG, and for that matter, the 'Vette). They're all similar enough though that people will indeed cross shop them, depending on exactly what they are looking for.

the base model is FWD. do you think people that are looking at a sexy sleek sports car like the C7 and FT-1 will be interested in a something that looks like a reskined VW beetle?

people that are looking at the Z4 do not need back seats. a Z4 is most likely a weekend car. people that are looking at the 4 series are looking for something with more room. and most likely a more comfortable ride.

base C7 has 450hp. that is more than the Z4 35is with 335hp and SLK AMG with 415hp. its also a larger car than all three of those tiny roadster that you listed.

Cayman/Boxster, Z4, SLK, TT are in the same compact roadster class.
RS-5, M4, C63, and RCF are in the same luxury coupe class.
C7 and FT-1 will be in the same sports car class.

how do you know who is cross shopping between what. where are your facts, sources, links and stats?

so what you are saying is people will cross shop between FT-1 and RC-F? maybe a hand full of people may. but i believe the general population will not be. again FT-1 = more of a pure sports car while the RC-F is more of a luxury coupe. they are totally two different animals.

Eh, plenty of Japanese cars get a lot of activity. Just because the UAW is big in Detroit doesn't mean auto enthusiasts and buyers who visit are all domestic people. The FRS and BRZ had plenty of activity two years ago. Zero activity this year, I think I saw one person looking at the SWP BRZ they had on the floor. I don't think I even looked at Scion to see what was going on there.

I took a few pics of the FT1. I need to upload the NAIAS pics I took this year.. but I'm lazy. Maybe one day

As for the C7, I like it. I need to drive one still but interior and comp seats are the best that's even been OEM/OEM Optional in a corvette. If they drive anywhere near as good as many people say, I'd have no issues buying one. It probably won't have DI seal failures on track either

Q: What's the difference between a 400whp Supra and an 800whp Supra?

Drive train facts are wrong for sure, Toyota said that this car would feature a conventional gas engine and not a hybrid. Furthermore a car like this is going to weigh a minimum of 1500kg, a 2.0T won't cut it. With that engine the Supra would hardly be faster than the 86!

Difference is that 800whp is useless in every day life, 400whp is about the max. And even that without traction control for rainy days is too much.
