FYI. My 2017 BRZ Throwout Bearing Went Bad

Hi everyone. I wanted to let you guys know that my 2017 BRZ throwout bearing went bad at 24500 miles. I just took it to the dealer this morning and they are replacing it under warranty. I thought Subaru had fixed this issue but either I got the original part from the factory or the revision didn't fix anything. My BRZ was manufactured in Feb 2017.

Might be using the old part number still. The Revision was in April 2017ish.

Ah ok. I knew that early 2017 model year BRZs had the old part but thought that was for those manufactured in Sept 2016 - October 2016.

Just sharing my experience.

I just had my throwout bearing done Friday. I specifically asked for the new part. The mechanic noted how difficult and finicky it was too install, compared to the old version. It's only been a few hundred kms. Hopefully I remember to post back here with an update.

This is my second bearing. The original seized at 130K. This second started whining at 220K and replaced at 228K (exedy stage 1 clutch may explain the shorter life). Now I have the revised TOB with another new exedy Stg1. Fingers crossed.

@N234 how's the exedy stage 1 clutch? Noticeable difference from stock?

It's a touch heavier than stock. I prefer it, but not an objective improvement. It's heavier so it can handle like 40% more torque before slipping.

@N234 Good to know. I'll make sure the dealer uses the new part as well. Thanks!

Yeah, you'll want to specify the new TOB part, not just a model year of BRZ/FRS (not related).

I think there's stockpiles of the old part that they will try and pawn off unless you drill down with them...

Just to validate this, I use the Exedy stage 1 clutch and I'm turbo with ~330whp and 250wtq - no issues holding
