So as most of you know, Tetsuya Tada, has finally admitted his team is developing a number of ways to increase performance of the showroom version; one of which will definitely make it to production when the 86 receives its mid-life upgrade in 2015.. This upgrade will most likely be a N/A 2.5L boxer pushing 190kw. I'm not so sure if i want to wait this long for the upgrade, so i was just wondering if its worth it or not. I want one now!! Opinion?

I think there are like three threads on this. All of this is speculation. Nobody can say if it is worth it or not until we get real details.

If you can wait a few more years to get this car, then wait and see.

If you haven't bought your brz yet, then you might as well wait for 2015 or at least until we get further deets on performance gains.

It's really up to the person if they want now or later.

It's still speculation. Sort of the kind of speculation that was around time ago regarding a Turbo charged BRZ-STI.

Remember how many "Subaru executives" were "revealing" that they are working on a Turbo BRZ-STI for release?

This is the same. Wishful thinking plus Automotive news feeding on the hype push a "Toyota Executives" that are "revealing" more powerful versions of the vehicle.

The reality....is that a Turbo BRZ-STI made more sense that actually believing Toyota/Subaru will go through a ridiculous costly mid-life upgrade of a powertrain for a platform that is new and most importantly is selling like hot cakes.

Coming from a background of financial analysis and profitability margins in production....believe me, they do need a BIG reason to change a powertrain mid-life of a generation.

Now, this will happen no doubt for the next generation GT-86...but for 2015...I highly doubt it.

Where did this 2.5L rumor even come from? Did someone just pull it out of their ass or did a Toyota dev say it somewhere?

No. With more power usually comes more bloat and "features" that are useless for the purpose of this car (fun), the soonest you would be able to buy a '15 will be over a year from now, if you're looking to save up and drive what you're currently driving and it will make it financially easier than go ahead and wait, otherwise you're just missing out on the fun the rest of us are having. Besides, does anyone think 'mid-life' is 2015 for a car that was introduced in 2012? That would imply the platform be scrapped by 2018, a six year lifespan for a car that had huge initial costs doesn't sound right, I'd peg a power upgrade (if it happens at all) would appear in the year 2015 with a '16 model year (stupid american practices) at the soonest, a year later realistically.

Pick up a '13 cheap, you'll be much happier instead of waiting 3 years. It says you already drive a BRZ, what do you care? Enjoy the car you have there's nothing to wait for.

Buy a BRZ now, enjoy it, upgrade it if you feel the need and change it with the newer model when it comes out IF it's any better.

But I would not hold my breath on anything.

All those "should I wait, blablablabla" are just annoying as hell and from people who most likely wont buy one or dont have the money. If you truly liked the car, you would have one already.

This...or you could be shrewd, wait for the 2015 model, and if the upgrade isn't to you liking, pick up a used 2013 for a great price.

Personally, after my test drive, I couldn't wait to own the car.

i say you wait till we get the 2.5L. which will probably be in 2020. when you definitely feel that the wait was worth it =P
