The part of the car that you drilling the hole, is that plastic or metal? if it's metal, would it start to rust in a couple of years?

Plastic. It's just the wheel well liner.

If you don't want to remove the rear wheels, use Vise-grips to hold a short 5/16" diameter piece of round-bar (or an old 5/16" drill bit of proper length) and heat it with a torch. Use it instead of a drill to make the last hole in the plastic liners, just use a steady hand so as not to contact the tab or hole on the mud guards. Only takes a second to melt through the liner and makes a nice clean hole. Did my entire install with no lift, no jack and no wheel removal. Took longer to remove the original fittings and clean the areas than to install the guards.
Oh, and I did lay a wet towel over the rear of the tires just in case of inadvertent contact. It's close but not bad if you're careful and use a short enough piece of round bar or bit.

I'm thinking of getting a set for my BRZ. I do have some concern about the spring clips. I'm thinking that as the spring clips are pushed in place the paint would be scatched and be a possible rust issue down the road.
Now I realize this is only for the front as the rear is all plastic.

Also, as long as you clip it lightly it won't scratch off the paint to the base metal. I put the clip on and took it off the first time and touched the area by hand, the painted area was fine. |

Thanks for the write-up I did mine yesterday, and it was the first "mod" to the car.

Excellent write up. Did mine. I had the concern about paint too. But they actually slip on well without scratching. Where I live nothing seems to rust, but I know other parts of the country and Canada need to worry.. Did anybody put side skirts on with the mud flaps? Thinking that it won't fit together.

All Canadian stock FRS come with "splash guards" installed. The only exception would be if a dealer installs a body kit as that uses the same pre drilled holes.
No BRZ comes with splash guards and Subaru dealers have no part number for them! Now that is weird in Canada given Subaru's tough guy reputation. Our friendly Canadian Scion dealers will supply a set of Scion splash guards complete with hardware and printed instructions for CDN$62.50 plus tax for you to fit to or have fitted to your BRZ. They have to order them in from Vancouver warehouse because they don't need to stock any! BTW, you only need to clean the fender and fender liner area to allow for a close and tidy fit. All the body contact areas are plastic so future corrosion cannot be an issue. No need to spray anything onto the car body before you fit the splash guards. |

The body kit uses the same holes so, no. Won't fit both but with the body kit you won't need splash guards anyway. |
