Lots of talk about it, oil temps have been recorded at 270F on the street, oil pressures drop significantly with temperature and rpm and it's thought that this is the cause of the FA20 eating the #4 bearing.

Big long thread from element tuning:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63723
Specific scary post about temp/pressure/bearing damage:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...&postcount=578

Gotta take it with a grain of salt those guys are running very hard way above what 99.99% of 86's will see due to their power levels and speed, but there have been a not insignificant amount of bearing failures attributed to lack of oiling even on street-only stock powered cars.

Different posts:

Consensus seems to be if you're a casual track user on a stock engine an oil cooler isn't required, but reccommended. 5W-30 is reccommended to maintain pressure and show a bit of temperature resistance. The average person is unlikely to notice anything until it goes "pop", I haven't heard anybody experiencing limp mode or any outward heat issues on stock power, but I'm sure CSG would know.

Not 86 related: Honda S2000 what's your opinion on stock S2000 rotors with HP+ pads and RBF 660 fluid for lapping. 225 wide 200 treadwear tires, front sway bar and cat-back exhaust are my only mods (built for B Street auto x). Will I have problems? Intermediate driver skill level.

My understanding is that the OEM cooler is far from useless, but that an aftermarket cooler will do a much better job. If you're tracking in 70 degree heat, you'll probably be OK stock. If you're tracking in 110 degree heat, you probably need an aftermarket oil cooler.

Just to clarify (I'm the confused one), talking about the Forester OEM oil cooler conversion vs Aftermarket

What I *know* happens is the oil thins out, and once it thins out enough, friction surfaces stop getting lubricated...

You're gonna have major issues on track.

With an oil cooler? Forever as far as engine and oil temps go.
Would the thinning of oil due to overheating still be an issue if the outdoor temperature is below 10 degrees Celsius (below 50 degrees Fahrenheit)?

My tires would be warm long before going continuously at high speeds of course.

Absolutely. Without an oil cooler, the oil has no direct contact with the outside world, and the only cooling it will get is whatever is conducted through the engine itself, and a minimal amount of radiation through the oil pan.

That's what I thought. I better pick up some more pads in the next 7 months before the next track day.

Oh ok, I keep mixing up the Hawk names - I forget which ones are the track ones and which ones are the performance street ones.

Nice thing about the Carbotechs is that there is only one naming convention and the higher the number, the crazier it is!

Not a question per se, but I did pull the trigger on some RE71Rs thanks to this thread (and others). I'm going to pair with some PMU Club Racers for SOW CW next month. I'll be pretty happy if I can go 1:31.XX or quicker.
