There isn't really any confirmation of a next gen 86. An engine displacement of 2400cc is not very likely. They are working on engine downsizing on all their models.

I read an article recently in evo magazine about how some of the manufacturers are adopting something called "right-sizing" rather than downsizing, as they realize that having a smaller engine doesn't always mean increased fuel efficiency, and while the tuning and such is basically made for the CO2 test, on the roads it's a different story. A lot of people have complained for years about how manufacturers' claimed fuel consumption figures are way optimistic, and apparently it stems from that. Hence this "right-sizing" is meant to address that. So to me this larger displacement doesn't come as a surprise. Paraphrasing here lol

From a MotorTrend article: "The Ascent is the first to get Subaru’s new 2.4-liter direct-injection turbocharged flat-four engine, which will show up in other future models. The horizontally opposed Subaru Boxer engine generates 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque." http://www.motortrend.com/cars/subar...-drive-review/

I wonder if they are contemplating this new powerplant?

There is also talk of reducing the MPG goals here in the US, which might open the door for some larger displacement after years of downsizing

edit - well the "talk" played out, EPA just announced rolling back the Obama era standards

Kyodo news is pretty mainstream, "respected" news in Japan, I'd say. It's kinda like the Associated Press, and whatever you might think about them, they don't typically just blow rumors about this kind of stuff willy-nilly. This looks relatively legit. If so, I'll have my money waiting! This would also murder 86 sales over the next couple years while people wait, I'd imagine. More displacement with same dynamics and still NA? That'd be amazing!
