Thank you in advance for anyone that can help with my question.
Edit: Yes, some may say its not practical, but I have already paid off my Camry to make up for that.
Well now, frostyfrs, the only people that can answer that question for you are loan officers.

I'd recommend you ask around at a few money lenders and ask them -

Make sure you stick to the old Mass companies like Commerce insurance. Most of them are still stuck on the old mandated insurance prices, which are far less than the national prices. I insured my Yaris and my BRZ for less than what I pay for just my BRZ in NC.

You don't need the Camry unless you have to get to work in blizzards. If there is two feet of snow on the ground and no plows and you have to get to work, keep the Camry. Everything else the frs can handle with snow tires and weekly cleaning. This car is amazing in the snow with the proper snow tires.

This. Finance as much of the car as you can unless you get some idiotically high finance rate. Payments might be annoying, but not having the money to pay for a car to be fixed that you need to get to work is far worse. Might be the only reason to keep a second car around if you can afford it.

@frostyfrs, I'll tell you what I would tell my sons, you don't need two cars and you don't need a car payment.

Sell the Camry, combine it with your $6,000 and pay for your car. Then, take your "car payment" and pay yourself in a separate account each month so you have money for maintenance and ultimately this car's replacement.

If you are worried about having an 86 as a single car and driving it in the winter, this is the wrong car for you. Plenty of folks winter drive their FRS, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it if I lived in the great white North. Driving in the winter isn't about the car, its about the driver and how you've prepared yourself and the car.

I don't agree with 100% of what Dave says, but most of it is good common sense that won't leave you worse off than where you started, if you need a simple financial plan that doesn't require an accountant, and you are willing to follow it. I've basically followed his plan without knowing I was doing that for 40 years.

As far as the "screw up" he did file bankruptcy because he messed up and didn't have a choice. My understanding is that he did go back and pay all his back debts though, including those dismissed in the bankruptcy. It was not because he felt he had to, that debt was relieved by the laws of the land, but he felt he was called to do so by his Faith. Here it is in his words.

I heard the 13-14 models are a hassle to work with, maybe try an 15+ if you can?

My main concern personally is just having spare money in savings for anything that can happen in life, along with the insurance ( though I guess thatís depends on the state )

Iím guessing you wonít be car pooling that often, and not having to deal with trunk space issues.

For modding, you honestly donít have a need to purchase anything....yet, enjoy the stock setup for sometime before purchasing anything performance wise, maybe put a new head unit inside the cab if you want CarPlay/Aauto.

Iíve wanted this car since I was 18, 27 now and I love every moment of it, wish you the best on your choice

Insurance is the killer on these cars, the '13 BRZ is more than my other 2 vehicles combined for the same coverage ('18 Forester XT, '20 Canyon Denali)

Man, this is the most helpful, civil, and polite thread we've had in the general forum since... Well since I got here.

Fuckyall I'm out!

Jk, good job folks.

I'm gonna go against the grain here and say I was convinced by my parents to trade in my old car when I got my FRS and it was a mistake looking back on it. Yes you have to insure and maintain and park 2 cars, but there is merit in having that second car to drive on nasty days, or drive friends around, or park in sketchy locations, or to use as a backup if one is broken. Not necessarily saying keep the car, but there is a valid trade-off OP should consider.

Then again, the car I traded in was a Saab 9-3 so might be a different story from keeping a Camry around.

Insurance is a killer on these cars at your age, but ANY car is going to be expensive at your age. As already mentioned, get rid of the Camry and use that cash plus what you save for a down payment to get the FR-S. You'll also be saving by only insuring a single vehicle. I've DD'd my '13 through 6 winters now around the Worcester area, and aside from some surface rust on parts like control arms and subframes, the sheet metal is still very clean underneath. Use a good rustproofing agent like FluidFilm, and keep the car as clean as practically possible, and it will age quite nicely. Get he best snow tires you can afford, but don't get hung up on getting the best snow tires on the planet....ANY snow tire is better than trying to daily on all-seasons around here...

At 18 the only thing you have to worry about is insurance. Get quotes. Chances are you'll have two car patents cause they would be that high

Financial side of it do what ever fits your wallet.

i don't agree with a lot of things he says. but for me, i've chosen to look at the reasons for the extremes he gives.

it also didn't help that an ex-girlfriend signed us up for the classes when i wasn't making enough to cover my most basic teenager expenses like gas and insurance... it was infuriating to go through the class about saving money, when i still had to consider myself lucky to be living with my parents rent-free...

good point. a 2005 350z had a higher insurance premium than a 2014 brz.. it was another small nail in the coffin that pushed me this direction.

i dunno, something about his demeanor-- he seems to be trying. the other brain surgeons that come through here just come off like they're looking for a pat on the back for a decision they've already made or a handout.

saab's are spectacular winter cars. but they're terrible summer cars.
