Installing the FT-86 SpeedFactory Emissions Rage Exhaust

Over the weekend my husband and I did a complete exhaust swap on my 2013 BRZ.

Parts list:
  • FT-86 SpeedFactory Catted Header
  • Motiv overpipe
  • Motiv catted front pipe
  • FT-86 SpeedFactory V1 resonated exhaust
This is essentially the Emissions Rage package, however I was supposed to receive the Invidia front pipe but got the Motiv instead. Overall I don't think that makes much of a difference, but when listening to sound clips keep that in mind just in case. I think it sounds exactly like their example videos, but ymmv.

I was honestly shocked by how easy this was. It took me two days at at a very relaxed pace to swap everything out.

You can find a full imgur album of the parts and my install here: http://imgur.com/a/aYdiO.

All the new parts laid out

Rusty catback removed.
This car is only 3 years old, and the midpipe was so rusted to the muffler that we couldn't break it loose!

Header, front pipe, and MOTHERFUCKING overpipe removed.

That overpipe was the hardest part. We had to jack up the engine about 2" to get it out.

Out with the old, in with the new!

This is my very favorite header.

Because we're thoroughly ridiculous people, we loaded both headers in our ND and drove to the auto parts store to borrow an O2 sensor socket, thinking we could just do the swap there. The thing was so cheap they didn't have a loaner, so I just made a round trip cuddling my header for no reason.

FT-86 SpeedFactory Catted UEL Header

Motiv Overpipe

Motiv Catted Front Pipe

FT-86 SpeedFactory V1 Resonated Exhaust

Final Result

All seemed well when firing it up and revving it on the stands, but after bolting on the debris shields something wasn't right. There was a strange vibration. The next day I put the car up on ramps and did some investigating.

Header Wear Spot.

Sure enough, there was a tiny contact patch between the header and the metal debris shield.

Corresponding debris shield wear spot

I tried hammering and sanding first, but all I did was make my ears ring and end up with blisters, so I broke out the power tools. I started with a 1/2" drill bit, but that didn't quite eliminate the contact patch, so I used a 1" hole saw on it.

Success!

The contact patch is now completely eliminated, and there's no more vibration in the car.

Here is an exterior sound clip, followed by interior sound with the vibration issue:

I have this exact same exhaust setup. My headers also hit the skid plate. what i did was add some washers on the bolts that hold up the skid plate. It helped alot but it still hits it from time to time on hard launches.

Also my OP has clearance issues as well. I can hear it hitting something on a hard launch and when i inspected it their are scuff marks on the OP. I never was able to fix that issue but im starting to get used to it.

After posting this around it seems a few other people have had this same issue, which doesn't surprise me. The tolerances are so tight that any little deviation can result in some contact.

I'm just glad it was only the one spot and easily fixed!

Thankfully the overpipe has no issues. I made sure to check it when I was investigating the header vibration, and it actually has very good clearance.

I think I would cry if I had to remove the overpipe again!

Well, you might be able to do it after removing the heat shielding. If you want to try that be sure to try and break the bolts while everything is still connected so you have some leverage.

If you can't get the shielding off or it takes you more than a few minutes to remove it, just jack up the engine. That's what I ended up doing.

Also, install the new pipe while the engine is still jacked up.

I only have jack stands, no lift.

To jack up the engine I removed the nuts from both motor mounts, then used the oil pan as a jack point, making sure to distribute the force with a block of wood between the jack and the pan.
