p.s. strange that you guys have that. such a thing would be quite "offensive" here.

p.s. x2: I left yesterday and we were on old SNL skits. I wake up today and here we are.... dafqu?
The AHC is supposed to be shows about military and first responders. Somehow it slowly evolved into the WW2 channel and then the German military and ended up with about 60% of it's content being about Hitler. It was a weird evolution to watch unfold over the space of a couple of years.

you should and make sure it's someone that's experienced in your situation. especially with all the new tax laws. some accountants don't know what they don't know. there might be deductions or credits that everyone that works in X industry knows about but even if you're guy is the top guy in some other industry they probably won't know about it.

get a good one and you won't have to worry about anything besides making enough cash.

I just find it strange that Canada has a channel called that.

It's not a Canadian only channel, it is American.

American Heroes Channel (formerly Military Channel and originally Discovery Wings Channel) is an American pay television channel that is owned by Discovery, Inc. The network carries programs related to the military, warfare, and military history and science.

I've got Comcast and had some form of cable/satellite most of my life and I've never heard of it.

must be hidden in some special package I'm not getting.

She stood me on the back porch of my grandparents farm house, when this man ran out of a car with a scratchy wool uniform on and grabbed me and hugged me. My mother said I was scared and cried.

Yep, I was only two years old, but I remember it.

When I was a child the neighbours on both sides of us were WW2 veterans. One British Air Force and one German Luftwaffe. I used to sit for hours and hours and listen to their stories. Keep in mind that the war had just ended about 15 years before that and these guys were only in their early forties not the grizzled old vets we picture now. Since I was so interested they gave me several of their souvenirs and keepsakes. I still have a few pieces of a Ju188 bomber engine, a couple of control knobs from a BF109, and a Luftwaffe belt and buckle that the British guy gave me and a placard from a Spitfire and a British steel helmet that the German passed on to me. It always struck me as funny that each side gave me stuff from the other!

Later in the early 70s I was a Sea Cadet and we would go to the local Veterans Hospital two evenings a month and spend hours visiting and talking with the hospital bound veterans. As many of them had been gravely injured (why they were in hospital 25 years after the war) and their families had pretty much abandoned them they were very happy that somebody was interested in their stories and would talk non stop.

Later in the 70s when I was stationed in Germany I would spend much of my downtime in the local gasthofs talking with the Germans. Since I had had a life long interest in WW2 and the stories of those that lived it the conversation naturally went in that direction. Again the war hadn't been that far back and many of the people I chatted with were German veterans or had at least dealt with the conditions as children.

All in all, through all those years of talking (more listening actually) to at least a couple of hundred people's stories I learned a pile that the history books just don't show well. This is the main reason that I try to correct statements such as "all Germans were Nazis and wanted to rule the world". Like almost every single historical example where the story is told by the victors it just isn't accurate. The vast majority of the population was just caught up in something they didn't want but they were unable to stop it or get out.

Yep I guess I didn't make it clear that it is broadcast in Canada but is actually an American channel.

My son in laws grandfather was a guard at a Polish concentration (forced labour not extermination) camp at age 16.
He still acts like he is one!

My Grandfather was 82nd Airborne, jumped on D-Day as part of the force that fought in Sainte-Mère-Eglise and eventually back to Utah Beach. Never could get him to talk much about the battles themselves but he had lots of stories he would share about the "good parts" of serving with his Brother in Arms.

After he passed my Uncle and I were going through some of of his momentos he had locked away in a trunk no one knew about. He has a couple of service revolvers, some German medals, and one Nazi armband with a note scribbled on the inside saying something like "6/9/1944. This one almost got me first".

Just looking at what was a real German armband completely freaked me out. I couldn't even touch it it gave me the willies so bad. Not sure what my Uncle did with them.

The combat stories that I was told were very rare. We hear about battles all the time but when you consider that actual direct combat was experienced by about 20% of any of the military (overall numbers) and that even then less that 1% of their time was spent in it then even if they do want to talk about it they won’t have that much to really say. Most of the stories I heard were the day to day living through the events and what they had to do to survive not battle tales.

I had a large collection of both German and British equipment at one time. The connections did not bother me as I considered them more as historic artifacts than symbolic ideals.

I'm pretty sure I'd have the same reaction as you if it happened today.

I was either 19 or 20 at the time, so it just made it very real to me, partially combined with the thought that this came off someone who was probably my age (at the time) that was just on the wrong end of my Grandfather's rifle and history.
