But the recommended weight and an oil cooler (to help keep it in normal operating temps and reduce thinning a bit if you're really worried) would be more than what you need for hard street driving, and be fine for even weekend tracking, Quote:
For comparison I used Amsoil in my VW TDI religiously, (the Germans are very picky about their oils performance) and it ran soooo much smoother, and quieter, you could literally feel and hear the difference Amsoil made in that car, 20k KM change intervals and the engine never skipped a beat, I just highly recommend amsoil in general, currently using their engine, transmission, and differential fluids 👍 |

Here is a Miller Nanodrive UOA. Me and few other members have been running this and we seem to like it. |

For 0W-30, it depends on the specs it meets. If it has a low HTHS of less than 3.5, the same applies and it will sometimes shear to a 20 grade in harsh conditions. The exception is a 0W-30 that meets ACEA A3 specs because those oils are designed for shear stability over fuel economy. The only advantage that a 0W-20 will give you is that it passes the cold cranking viscosity test at -35C as opposed to -30C that the 5W-20 passes and gives you probably .5% improvement in fuel economy in temps below freezing for the first 10 minutes of driving. In severe conditions, I look at NOACK, HTHS, anti-wear/detergent additive package, and kinematic viscosity at 100C. -Dennis |

@ bluesubie - lets tune the oil for the D/D E85 application - Your recommendation ? (sorry if you've been asked this a hundred times)

As I approach 300k miles, I am admittedly looking at 5W30 Pento Superformance III or Liquimoly Top Tec 4200 5W30. Why? These are both VW 507.00, with the highest level of piston cleanliness required. Also I am merely spec'd for SM 5W30. Piston cleanliness has been my issue in the past. OP, Amsoil Signature Series 5W20 and Pennzoil Platinum Ultra w/Pure Plus 5W20 are very good motor oils. |

There's a pretty wide variety of E85 uoa results posted here as well (very good and not so good), probably reflecting the wide variety of tunes. Not knowing anything about your specific application, I'd probably go with Red Line or Motul 300V xW-20, or Pennzoil Ultra 10W-30. Quote:
That run on Motul X-Cess 5W-40 was after I saw a very long oci from a Stage IV WRX uoa posted on bitog (~8,000 miles IIRC) and picked some up from my buddies at AZP Installs. A lot of prior runs on Motul were purchased with Subaru bucks (Subaru Mastercard rewards), but that program is dead now so no more free oil. Running ancient API SM PU 5W-40 in my ancient Foz because Pennzoil was good to me and sent me free oil in the past. I'm not brand loyal though and have run many different brands; Motul, Pennzoil, Castrol, Amsoil lots of different Mobil1's, Red Line, etc. I change my mind every two weeks about what oil I want to run next. -Dennis |

Very interested in what works in a GDI boxer under heavy load. The E85 sure adds another factor. Seriously looking at a brand new Forester, base model, MT and would be going for .5 million miles in just a few years. |

Impressive. But I would have thought an oil with HTHS of 3.7 is a little heavy for the tight clearances on the FA20, regardless of NA or FI? I don't know much, but the VI seems a little low compared to say their 0w30 SSO?
