I got to play for a couple hours last night and then couldn't log on... Sucks cuz I had to stay up last night so I pretty much sat around doing nothing all night

XBL is apparently back up but PSN is still down.

It's believed that Sony has disco'd the servers to prevent damage or whatever... No official word on anything, but it's allegedly a DDoS attack. It's just a network of computers responding to commands telling them to send little communication requests to a single server. With a large enough pool of computers, they can flood the server which overloads its ability to respond to other requests, and you get a timeout error, etc. Often these computers belong to innocent people but they're infected with a virus or malware that makes them respond to these botnet commands. Your own computer might be doing it right now and you'd never know. Otherwise botnet farms in China can be "rented" with a CC and the US has no jurisdiction and China DGAF. They're just given the target IP address and it goes down.

Lizard Squad has taken credit for it, and apparently they previously made a deal with Sony that they would get some ultra mega gold memberships or something if they never attacked again. I don't know much about the legitimacy of that part, but if it's true it's just permanent bait for any kid who knows how to do it. So, no PSN for anyone until they decide to stop. If they go through Chinese botnets or something then it could literally be months if they really wanted.

Kim Dotcom (remember Megaupload? His mansion was raided, etc? He's the owner) offered 3k Mega Privacy (his new company) licenses to LS, with the condition that if they attack again the licenses will be invalidated.

LS says they've ceased, and they are not going to attack again in the future. Now it's on Sony and Microsoft to get their stuff back up and running. A slight problem with that is now that they're recovering, you have millions of users all hitting authentication servers all at once... basically, the console owners are DDoSing them now. It's been a while since I've done any networking, but I think now it's a matter of load balancing and just getting everything stable while trying to respond to the legitimate requests.

Most in Saint Louis, too. I'm not entirely sure what infrastructure exists in St Louis, but I had read somewhere that Norse's data center is there, so it's a possible honeypot I suppose.

Yeah St Louis is getting absolutely hammered, I wonder what's there?

Sony's official page says their servers are offline, but states "some users are having trouble connecting" which is really vague and kind of insulting... I guess its possible this may be because of users flooding the servers (like you said) essentially causing a DDoS, but that would also mean that we'd be hearing progressively larger reports of people getting in. From what I'm reading on Reddit the consensus seems to be that Sony has taken the servers offline to try and fix it somehow on their end.

That is assuming Limp**** Squad has actually stopped and nobody else has jumped on the "I'm an asshole on the internet and need lots of attention" bandwagon.

Supposedly it's slowly coming up. And this unwaterings dude on twitter is going all out on LS. Whether he's actually doing anything or not, dunno, but damn they pissed him off.

And Anonymous is claiming that FinestSquad and LizardSquad are one and the same.. Good cop/bad cop, if you will.

edit: reading and following this more.. this is some of the most off the wall unbelievable stuff imo... that they'd let a hacktivist ssh into core services to help mitigate attacks, etc. And some weird stuff going on. Something doesn't sit right with me about any of it.

Finished Crota's End Saturday night/Sunday morning. Pretty fun but I'd say this was much more difficult than VoG. It also didn't help that we had two level 29 players, myself included. I got the raid shader, chest piece, and rocket launcher so not a bad haul. Definitely going to make sure I'm 30 or 31 before I do it again though. That damage penalty hurts too much at 29. I'll be down for Crucible later in the week, but I'm going to dedicate some time to the Halo 5 beta this week!

Yep, I've only tried the new Raid once myself and I was still a 29 then too. It was rough for sure, but I didn't get to Crota so hopefully I can do that here in the near future. The last 4 days have been pretty broken as far as the game goes between the DoS attacks and chat/party not working properly. I didn't even try playing it yesterday. Not sure how much I'll even play for the next few weeks with the Halo Beta being available now. Unless the Halo beta sucks or is broken and not working I'll probably be spending a decent amount of time on there. I do need to do some Crucible since I have 2 Crucible commendations to use on gear, just need the marks. Do you have your mic back up and working?

Yea I just misplaced it that day. Later on found out my cat took it and hid it under my dresser.
