BRZ in snow
How are RWD's these days in the snow? For simplicity sake, lets say you have a car like the BRZ or similar with 4 snow tires on, how do RWDs compare to your run of the mill FWD. I have had a FWD RSX for the last 8 years, and that car stunk in the snow, so i assume you cant do much worse.
I would like to get this car, but I am from a northern climate. Any ideas? Last edited by sieeegel; 02-20-2012 at 10:31 PM. Reason: grammar |

Hi welcome,
The BRZ was tested in Snow, and the Automatic has a Snow mode. It should prove to be pretty decent in snow. But because we have no user data or editorials about the car being tested in snow. We can't tell you how well it wil handle. Only the manufacturer can tell and they haven't said much. Also when you get the time please introduce yourself up above in the new members thread. Have fun.

Thank you for that information! What I was curious about was RWDs in general and how they well they perform in snow. Thank you in advance! |

BMW has always been RWD and they're German cars, it snows in Germany often in their winter. The BMW do just fine in snow, so RWD do fine in snow especially with snow tires and a good caution sensible driver.

Watch the video of it rallying off road and being tested in the snow.

With all limited slip differntial, traction control, stability control, and antilock breaks. This should be a very capable car in the snow. Sure it's not going to be as user friendly as a FWD or AWD car but it should do well.

Thank you, I actually just watched it right before you forwarded me the link. To be fair, these are professional drivers. they could probably drive anything with wheels well in the snow. But still interesting. Anyone here own a RWD that they have driven in the snow? Thank you. |

Snow tires make a big difference. Don't use summer/sport tires. Car has LSD which will help along with traction control and stability control. Car is well balanced. Don't forget to use winter tires.

Assuming you buy a decent set of winter tires (not all season) and drive intelligently you will do fine. RWD can get you into more trouble than FF and it can be tricky to get moving at times. though since this car has TC, VSC, LSD, and isn't super torquey down low I don't see it being that bad. My friends M3 has a lot of electronic controls and when they are all enabled it is actually tricky to get the car to do anything to unexpected. |

I often dream of empty snow covered parking lots with this car
In all seriousness, I echo all of the previous comments about a nice set of winters. Night and day difference. |

Also worth noting it might be worthwhile to watch the BMW video on YouTube regarding RWD driving in winter/adverse conditions vs FWD. Good video. |

Ive driven a 328 in heavy snow with all season tires and it was NOT fun... slips very easily.. predicable.. but annoying.
