Haha well I'm looking into getting one some time in the near future and I've been researching a lot. I know most of the facts and know what to ask when looking at a table. But just recently I came across a manufacture that makes a lot of steel tables that look really good.

The only problem is I've always seen 100% wood construction being preferred. But that's against artificial materials. I don't know if steel would be better or if a wood table would always be king.

Well now...back in the day I used to make some side money delivering and setting up pool tables.

There is only one real thing you need to understand about them:

This is the classic example of the saying "you get what you pay for". Lower level manufactures top line tables can be great and top line manufactures lower level tables can crap. If you end up with a crap table it will always remain a crap table and there is zero that can be done to fix it.

I have little experience with steel tables as they were pretty rare back then but do know they were a bitch to set up and get level. They are also don't take well to temperature changes and will go off level when switching from air to heating.

I thought the best tables were made of slate, no? When I was a kid, my next door neighbor had a beautiful pool table in the basement. It was slate and his dad kept it up beautifully.

Oh, and what @Tcoat said about thermal effects. That's why granite is the preferred precision measurement/reference surface.

Slate is the best playing surface. You need at least 1" thick slate for a proper table. Unless you don't care about how well it plays, then get thinner, or non-slate for cheap.

I've always heard/read that 100% wood for the actual cabinet is the best, but again, that's against anything fake or cheap like MDF. I have no knowledge of anything with 100% steel construction. What Tcoat says about leveling sounds annoying though, so that might be reason enough to avoid it.

Yes one inch slate in one or two sections (depending on the size of the table). It seems counter intuitive but it is easier to level and maintain the flatness on multiple sections than it is for one big piece. Some of the decorative parts can be "fake" wood without and issue but make sure the whole supporting structure is real wood.
Don't be afraid of looking at high quality used ones either. As long as the frame and structure is good you can ignore the bumpers and felt since they are cheap to replace. You can almost always find top quality tables being sold for a song if you look hard enough. Take my word for it though they are a son of a bitch to move so buying new and paying for delivery and set up is a very worthy consideration.
