so a 86 with a lower profile 16" wheel/ tire (say a 45-50 series), would have a lower COG then a stock US 86 with 17" ?

Even a 40 series tire wouldn't be enough to offset it half an inch. It's also not as simple as saying, lowering the car 2 inches means the Cg has moved 2 inches lower.

but but...torque dip!!!!

surely you cannot drive the car with such a performance detracting design flaw!

I think i'll wait for the 2020+ models of first gen 86 to become used, they have the updated head units

225/45-16 is 0.6" shorter than stock diameter, would lower the car 0.3". It is *nearly* as simple as saying that lowers the c.g. by 0.3" given that unsprung mass is less than 10% of total weight.

I've heard numbers as high as 15%, but yes it's nearly semantics at such an amateurish level. Still note worthy that it's not a 1:1 calculation.

The FA20 seems rather unloved in this forum, while it is imperfect, it does:

(1) provide a fully balanced configuration, unlike an in-line four. But why is it harsher than the Skyactiv-G? Because of inadequate damping by the OEM crank pulley. The FA20 is much smoother with a fluidampr (or equivalent) installed.

(2) operate with a pronounced torque dip. But that's is primarily due to engine tuning. There are other OEM and after-market ignition map and exhaust combinations that minimise the torque dip.

(3) weigh more than an in-line four. Not much anyone can do much about this.

(4) provide a better front/rear weight distribution, and can be mounted further back.

(5) provides mediocre power and fuel consumption compared with the Skyactiv-G. That can be addressed if Toyota implements the Toyota Dynamic Force technology to the FA 20.

(6) have numerous significant product failures (actually breaking the record of re-calls for a any Toyota/Subaru) since day one. By 2017, most of the design problems have been identified and repaired.

Therefore, I like the FA20 for years after 2016. Just wish Toyota and Subaru did more testing before releasing Toybaru for sale to public.

Conclusion -

Substantiating data?
I know of the one engine recall and even then the FA20 was a tiny percentage of the overall numbers involved.

Not really... The flat-4 engine had to be mounted rather far forward in order to have clearance for steering shaft. The FT86's front/rear weight distribution at 55/45 is not that good (in fact it's pretty poor IMO) for an FR sports/sporty car...

BUT I think the "fix" for this is to make a shortened-wheelbase 2-seat version with rear wheels moved ~10-12" forward
Yeah, not gon happen...
