Tony's Budget Turbo Build
Here is my 2013 BRZ purchased November 15 2012.
I initally wanted to keep everything na and relatively stock for the first 6 years of ownership, Warranty and all that business. Then I drove an actual fast car and my little BRZ's 157rwhp just wasn't cutting it anymore. So i took it to a local shop to spitball some ideas and came up with this... Oil return Specs: Precision built Garrett GT3076R with a Precision DSM .48 turbine housing. Tial 38mm wastegate recirculated Turbosmart Vee port pro BOV Blacked out FMIC (retains washer bottle) Omni 3 bar MAP Blowthrough MAF AEM failsafe Guage mounted in ac vent PTuning cam plate for gravity fed oil return Lots of heat shielding VMS vacuum block 2.25in. SS Wrapped Up and down pipe OEM header OEM front pipe OEM midpipe OEM tail pipe Tuned via Ecuflash I'm currently on a extremely conservative base map that is map sensor limited. There are still a few kinks to work out but im very satisfied with what we were able to accomplish in 7 days. Huge thanks goes to Beast coast customs in Watertown NY for helping me put this together. Just drove it 1000+ miles from NY to Atlanta with no drama. I removed the weather strip on the wiper cowl which helped get rid of any heat. Thinking of creating a vent where the turbo sits to really expel some heat.

Update: So all in all Ive spent something around $2k to turbocharge my own BRZ. Im an e4 in the military so obviously I dont have a whole lot of extra dough to toss around on one of the existing kits. To be honest, while I know my kit isnt as pretty as the ones you can buy off the shelf, it is MINE, which means its unique. I think its a bit boring when you go to a meet and everyone's got the same business under the hood... no fun. So if youre a purist, youre not gonna like me
Impressions: with my current map... its still slow lol. but thats ok because im safe. I can boost to about 3psi before the map sensor says "no". It does pull a little harder than stock but I wont wring it out so i have no idea what it can actually do nor do i care to find out. I'll accept any help on tuning that I can get honestly and ill be getting an oft soon as finding someone with a tactrix cable seems to be impossible... Because the exhaust is ultimately stock the car is amazingly quiet. All you hear is spool then a little flutter then some blow-off whoosh. it almost feels as if everything is OEM. I'll make some vids soon... thanks for viewing! Last edited by glorydays; 06-26-2014 at 11:12 PM. |

@raven1231 well I am thinking of reproducing the kit but right now id just like to get it all tuned correctly. if i do have the exhaust piping redone for myself i wouldnt be opposed to selling the original version. then you could find a good 16g or 18g for really cheap.

Welcome to the turbo-by-battery club!
I actually made the mistake of going Precision and not Garrett when I went turbo. I'm saving up for a GTX turbo currently and the car should be beastly(er) very soon. If I had known you were in Atlanta I'd let you take a look at my setup if you needed any ideas or hints or inspiration or just basic routing, etc. ** What was that you were saying about the weather strip? My turbo needs more cooling and anything helps.

well thank you sir! your car was my inspiration actually. but yea i was only there for about three days visiting family so I didnt really get out much. so far the precision is holding up well but i need to hurry and replace the oem header with a non catted version so it doesnt eat it. @Synack have you done so already? im also starting to wonder if the pre turbo cat is affecting the af ratios that my wideband sees. im really not sure.
as far as the weather strip, i removed it completely and it works tremendously. at stops I can see the heat venting out. Im not sure whats happening at speed but as far as i can tell, its relieving a lot of heat. also no water gets into the engine bay when it rains. so ditch it! |

We actually ditched the cat a LOOOOONG time ago. It blew out during dyno runs and just stopped working altogether. It was screwing up the car's idle and other things too. DITCH IT! I also put a new header in there, I believe the Agency Power ($400 from Dynosty) unequal length one. Do it all at once so you only have to tune for one setup. Dude my turbo is roasting in this Atlanta heat so I need it to vent ASAP. I wonder if we can remove the 86 side vent logo and make a DIY thing to help it get more air.

You get a nice gap there for the heat to escape
