There is evidence yes of peoples perfectly fine tranny's that check in, but that's because either they don't rag on the car, or they have been driving a stick for a long time. (I've never driven a stick so the thought of going FI on a manual 86, I worry about the transmission since I'm not the best shifter in the world)

I guess for me it would be more of a piece of mind to know that a replacement tranny like the V160 or more practically the auto with SSP upgrades, is more than sufficient for a less than stellar shifter and power output.

sweet im glad to see people getting back into this as i was just going to start something like this on my own. and even better that Sportsguy83 is here because youre really the reason this even came into my head.
my buddy and me have been talking about forced air with the compression on the frs/brz with it being 12.5:1 that is already very high as it is. adding 10lbs of boost you ''should'' be around 21:1 and 20lbs of boost ''should'' be around 29.51:1
now those are some insainly high compression ratios. and to me it sounds like it shouldnt work. but clearly it is. and no one can seem to understand why or howlong.
i mean if sportsguy83's car is still running well on 20lbs, running e85 if i can remember correctly which would bring compression down a fair bit but not far enough to be a practical DD. thinking about this the last 2 days has made my brain hurt.

My advice is to think about turbo diesel engines.

While your concern about cylinder pressure is on the right track, the static compression ratio of 12.5:1 does not tell you how much pre-combustion cylinder pressure you actually end up with. On any engine, due to valve timing, the dynamic compression ratio is lower. Sometimes much lower. On top of that you have the pressure wave effect of intake and exhaust plumbing which affects how much air ends up in the cylinder.

The issue of high pre-combustion pressures is that the air/fuel mixture can heat up to the point of spontaneous ignition (detonation). One of the benefits of direct injection engines is that they can run much higher cylinder pressures due to the cooling effect of injecting fuel during the compression stroke, especially using fuels like e85.

I didn't see anything about lower compression pistons in that thread. As a matter of fact is was changes to the FA20, not differences from the FA20DIT. Where's the "real" thread?

Everything in that thread pertains to the FA20DIT, not the FA20 in our cars as WoW may have thought when he originally posted it two years ago.
Nonetheless, the content is valid with respect to the DIT engine. And yes, the compression is lower than on our cars.

Thanks for clarifying.

I was hoping read that the crank and rods of both engines were the same, but just with different pistons to achieve the desired CR.

I can guarantee the rods are different. I had our parts department look them up.

Just to bring this thread back to life since so much time has passed and hopefully people are more knowledgable about our cars. How reliable is it to FI these cars?

Is there a scenario that it can be done with the most little amount of headache down the line while Dailying it.

Basically to put down money and get a faster version of our cars as if Toyota/Subaru made them

No.

There is always more risk involved as they engines were not built to hold up to FI. Yes, there's a chance your car will be fine, but for how long?

It seems as though generally the lower the psi and hp/tq numbers are the better, as well as keeping the IAT's to a manageable number and getting a reputable tuner to tune your car.
