I dont see how this car will be above 2600-2800 lbs, they would have to purposely put bricks in the trunk in order to get it that heavy. This is a really small car thats purpose built as a coupe with a 4 cyl engine. What could possible be in there to make it heavy?? I celica GT-S I believe only weighed like 2500lbs

The early rumor / speculation / info from Best Car Plus magazine (which is floating around everywhere else but here) was that the weight was going to be <1000kgs and it was using a 120hp 1.5 2NZ-FE. This original plan was to keep the price <$12,500.
I'd hope they would give us a more powerful engine, even if that meant increasing weight to 1100-1300 and the price to $18-25k. If not, this won't be much of an upgrade over my NA miata. I guess it'll have a 6-speed, so 75mph on the freeway shouldn't require 4000rpm, so that'll be a nice upgrade! |

The first I heard was was from 7tune: 1100 kg as a target weight, a Subie 1.5 motor and a price target of right around $20,000. That's still pretty close to what they're developing today... |

Well the Toyota press release for the concept expliclity stated a 2L boxer... would be a huge disappointment if they downgraded.

You know I think Toyota can do it. I know its getting harder for modern cars to stay light because of all the safety requirements but it's not like theres not cars out there that still weigh 2300 pounds. Toyota makes one actually - the yaris. And I bet if you looked up the yaris' dimensions it'd probably be longer and definitely taller than the concept FT-86.

The AE86 is posted, factory in the U.S., around 2300lbs.
The dimensions of the FT-86, so far, are extremely similar (almost exact) to that of the AE86, with it actually being an overall shorter vehicle, yet slightly wider. Take into consideration lighter materials on the mechanicals (all aluminum engine, compared to cast Iron/aluminum 4A-GE, etc.) Take into consideration stricter safety requirements... Eh, I'd say ~2600lbs 2800 is really pushing it... The pictures don't do justice to the size of this car, it literally will be as small as your current AE86 (if you're lucky enough to own one). Edit: For those who are picky about the weight, just do what I'm gonna do: Baseline model in terms of luxaries without skimping on the performance. If I can get all the performance goodies without power windows, locks, sunroof, GPS gizmos, etc., then I'll be as happy as can be. |

I'll be doing the same in getting as stripped down a version as possible amenities wise. If Toyota is truly aiming this car at enthusiasts, they will offer a base version with very little fluff and other versions with fancier creature comforts. |

Isn't it almost identical in size to a 370z?
Just go stand next to/sit in one of those, and you'll get a pretty good idea. |
