Who has replaced a water pump? I'm at 192000kms and not sure if I should.

Unless you have weeping coolant coming out the piss hole then it's time to replace it.

Otherwise if it's not broke don't fix it.

If you are considering preventative maintenance, I haven't heard of a water pump going out on this engine, so I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree but, I was reading on another forum that some people have been through a couple. So, I just wanted to get an idea as to 1 how common, and 2 if it's a good idea at my milage to put in a new one. I cannot afford to have engine problems etc.

A water pump is not a preventive maintenance item. It's the kind of thing you leave sealed up until you actually have a problem. Usually you can see cooling issues coming from a ways off if you pay attention.

Then you should get a bicycle.

Otherwise, get a roadside assistance program and use the money you're trying to waste on an unnecessary water pump replacement to start a savings account for emergency funds.

1. - it's not a common problem

2. - you don't need a new water pump

If someone has gone through multiple pumps on a Twin then clearly they don’t use the correct coolant. Probably running straight water or something dumb like that.

In the past, people usually replaced the water pump and serpentine belt at 100k, but technology has improved since then.

At that mileage, I would take a look at your serpentine belt and look for any cracks. If you see any cracking, that means the rubber is drying out and that is something you should replace.

I know my water pump is going out. I can get one from toyota, but I see several after market brands for a fraction of the cost. Does anyone have experience with these? Damage to the engine is a whole lot more than an oem part. However, if a cheap one works just as well, I'd rather save my money.

What's your time worth? Is it cheap enough to have the car go down to do the job twice?

If yes, get the cheaper one.

ACDelco makes a replacement for $66 on Amazon Prime. I've already had the car up on jack stands and under panels off 3 times this weekend for other projects. I'm sure I will be either under the hood or under the car doing something to it again.

Not the serpentine belt, the timing belt. The only reason for doing the water pump when replacing the timing belt is because on an engine like that you have to remove the timing belt again to replace the water pump, so while it's all apart to replace the timing belt (which does require replacement) it was common to replace the water pump since it's a cheap part and everything is apart already. Timing belt jobs were easily $1000, to not replace a $100 part while you're in there is just silly.

Not doing the water pump while doing the timing belt would be like replacing a clutch and reusing the throwout bearing.
