On the ethanol production part that Tcoat and extrashaky were talking about, from a farmer's view, ethanol subsidies have increased the price of corn somewhat so growing it is a bit more profitable. After the fermentation and ethanol production, the corn is still used as feed for livestock, it has been for years in the alcohol industry. It's mixed with other feed but still used. As for using the ground for corn instead of wheat, we grow wheat on corn and soybean ground in the winter for a cover crop and then harvest the wheat in the spring before planting corn and/or soybeans. I will tell you that it takes quite a bit of energy (i.e. fuel for tractors, combines, and semis) during the planting, spraying, harvesting and hauling of any grain. If you take that into account I would say that ethanol takes more energy to make than it creates by burning, while gasoline is probably more energy efficient in this case.

As I understand it, corn and corn product subsidies were originally put in place to stabilize wheat grain prices. If we grow too much wheat, then prices drop and bad things happen.
As for ethanol, just think of it as a "low tech" method of storing solar energy. In general, the more "high tech" something is, the more energy has gone into making it. Just my .02. |

I hear there is quite a bit of "disinfectant" there.

Actually, I think, manuals are okay with regular but automatics definitely need premium.
