I got the spark plugs for $80 (which was the cheapest I found) and had a tech (who is a friend) install it for $258 (2 hour of book time @ $129/hrs, though it took more than 2 hours).

Spark plugs aren't terrible. Book time is probably pretty high with the "proper" way. Many things have to be disassembled.

Myself and a tech did the plugs on my brz, took a little over an hour.

Must have tools if you do it yourself:

Many bendy joints, flexable magnet, skinny hands.

Process is basically:

drop the skid plate

unbolt the two motor mounts

jack up the engine about 2 inches

Pull the HPFP shield

Undo the coil packs

Remove the coil

use many bendy joins to get the socket into the hole

use flexible magnet to pull the spark plug

Reverse order

Same here. Or the transmission and diff fluid. (75% of the forum just died of a stroke from reading this).

I have traded in cars with 400K kms (250K mikes) with the original fluids and plugs in it and never had an issue with the cars.

As a mechanic, this is very impressive. As a car lover, this is very disturbing lol.

Well if it starts up on the button and idles perfectly then it's running fine. And if it's running fine it's running fine.

come to think of it, when I had my corolla I never got spark plugs changed or any kind of 60k service done to it. And I drove that thing for over 120k miles with no real problems. But im thinking better to be safe than sorry with the FRS, this is my baby after all and I plan to drive this thing until the wheels fall off.

But like you said, it's a small price to pay IMO to enjoy driving this car. Compared with other mods I've done, it's really not that much. I've spent almost $500 on my oil pressure gauge alone & parts to install it.. You just have to budget a few thousand in advance for stuff like this.
dude...

budget $1000 or so for maintenance items?

are you crazy?

that would get in the way of my elaborate five year, twelve stage tier 1 to 5.3 turbo hellaflush drifter mode plan. I even have overnight shipping from japan factored in at realtime post pricing.

how do you expect me to know that I have to spend some money every 5 years or so for needed maintenance? wtf? People won't even SEE the spark plugs so why change them if people won't notice? fuck this car too much money.

selling it.

I give up.

Ok so just got back from getting my oil change and asked for a quote for the 60k service and the advisor just thought it was just a regular oil change and tire rotation and what not. Told him that according to the car manual a few things had to be done like replacing spark plugs and some fluids checked. He said ok I'll get you a quote. Oil change got done and came back with a quote from a different advisor this time and he said the estimate for the 60k would be 220 which sounded kinda low to me considering all the stuff the 60k service recommends getting done. I said whatever didn't feel like trying to explain to another advisor again after waiting 2 hours for oil change plus they were pretty busy. Anyway is there some kind of paper I can print out that lists everything that needs to be done for the 60k that I can just show them so they actually know what I'm talking about? I assumed that since I'm at a Toyota scion dealership they would just pull up the Frs and see what is recommended for the 60k but I guess they just go by a certain set guideline for every vehicle. Dealerships...sigh

@timmydatooth the dealership should have given you an itemized receipt for your car maintenance.

"I'd like to schedule my car for the 60,000 mile service please."

In all seriousness: plugs, brake fluid, oil, oil filter, air filter. Cabin filter and coolant if you feel like it.

My dealer had a well priced package for all the above plus tire rotation.
