If I use 2L instead of 2.2L will it be a problem? If it is can I mix two different transmission fluids for the last .2L?

If I do this with jacks am I going to need 4 to keep it level or can I just lift the top or bottom?

maybe OP can go ahead and post up these parts numbers for the crush gaskets in the original post -- can someone who's done this confirm these are the right part numbers?

Differential fill plug gasket: SU00300122 @$2.30 each
Differential drain plug gasket: TOY1215710010 @$1.50 each
Transmission fill/drain plug gasket: SU00303626 @>$11 each

I went to the Subaru dealer today and he said the Tranny fill/drain gaskets are $8 each so I ordered those, but he did not find any parts for the differential. If someone can confirm these are the right #s I will call him back and ask him to order these for me too. Will the TOY # work at Subaru?

I picked up the parts (which were special order) at my local dealer and when I got them from the parts guy, he was pretty skeptical that these parts would need replacing... he confirmed what others have said that these oem gaskets/washers are aluminum and don't crush very much. He suggested that in the future (since I had already bought these), to just reuse the existing gaskets, or get copper ones from a local parts store for far cheaper. He said copper gaskets would crush/deform better and make a better seal. I did find a pair of gaskets at O'Reilly's Auto Parts that seem to be the right fit and would work just as well. Anyways here is a photo with all the parts numbers from Subaru.

Agree. The tranny washers did not have any noticeable crush to them. The diff washers did crush significantly tho like the oil drain washer. I suggest just replacing the diff washers (2) to save a couple bucks.

Seems like everybody is using the Motul gear 300, anybody try Swepco? Been popular with quite a few subaru and porsche folks.

changed the diff @8k mi, lots of metal shaving probably just break in but good to get fresh fluid in there earlier than service recommended. Used a 10mm socket and breaker bar (an allen wrench won't work.) Used the Motul and the easy fill bottles make it well worth the extra price.

I work so far from home (70mi) and have so many things to do on the weekends, I bit the bullet and just had my dealership do a tranny and diff fluid change for me at my 15k service (which they scoffed at doing, since they normally just inspect those fluids).

I asked for samples of engine, trans and diff fluids, and they also returned the remainder of the new diff fluid. I thought they would use a Subaru brand oil, but it's some no-name generic Now I'm wondering if they even bothered to clean the metal shavings off the plugs. I also found charges for "lubricating throttle" - it's not in the service schedule, so it smells like some unnecessary dealer upcharge item.

First and last time I take my car to the dealer for service - next time I'll force time for myself on the weekend and open up this DIY guide.

+ Fluid transfer pump if you aren't using Motul Gear 300 Lubrimatic Fluid Quart Pump 4cc : Amazon.com : Automotive
Just finished my change and a few comments:
1) The Hex bit given worked well, but for the transmission fill port, it will NOT work when using a 3/8" to 1/2" drive adapter. It becomes too long to get into that space. I ended up using the hex bit and an adjustable wrench.

2) The fluid pump mentioned will NOT fit on the MOTUL 300 bottle. You may not need the pump for the transmission, but you will need it for the differential (unless I missed something).

3) I don't know if they are still doing this, but No Limit Motorsports did include 2x crush washers for the rear differential. Didn't realize this was part of the package when buying from them, but very cool!

4) The transmission fluid looked fine to me and probably could have skipped changing that (no particulate on drain mag-plug either). However, Differential had a ton of sludge on the plug like others had mentioned.

Thanks for all the help on the tutorial!
