Plus limited range and time to recharge. That's why the coming PHEV's are more realistic for most users at the moment. Expect to see PHEV RAV4 and Camry next year.

Depending on where you live and the traction battery capacity, they'll be eligible for up to $10,000 in direct tax credits for a few years until Toyota hits the US 200K unit BEV/PHEV tax credit limit as the law stands now.

Ultimate rickroll that would be.

Ok now that would be epic lol
Or maybe a deep fake of Rick Astley cruising in a new 86 singing ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’

Zero chance. If anything, Toyota wants Subaru to stay viable to deflect charges of running a monopoly, something they've been accused of before that without maneuvering like this could lead to a breakup in Japan. The JV venture with Mazda is another part of that plan.

This is IMO essentially another Subaru bailout dressed up as progress.

What monopoly charges? Never heard of such a thing for them. (Serious question not just doubting)

From the Tokyo show on 9/24:

Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said that they want to make “a new 86 that surpasses the Supra. This is what the customer expects”.

I sure hope they are right...if so it's time to start saving my pennies!

It goes back to the '80's after Toyota announced US production at the former NUMMI plant in Freemont, CA. Japanese unions went apoplectic at the thought of outsourcing production, resulting in civil unrest. Some Japanese politicians not owned by Toyota saw an opening to advance their interests and proposed breaking up Toyota claiming that it was a monopoly.

"Toyota's lead engineer on the program recently said the development team wants the next 86 to leapfrog the Supra in terms of driving enjoyment, which may seem like a stretch, but it doesn't necessarily imply that it will be faster or otherwise more capable.
What remains to be seen is whether the twins will continue to ride on a modified Subaru platform or migrate to the Toyota New Global Architecture platform. That decision will have implications for the choice of powertrain going into the next-generation car, as a boxer engine (which both cars currently employ) would likely only mate up to a Subaru-derived chassis.
Toyota has access to a longitudinal 4-cylinder, though it has only appeared in turbocharged applications thus far."

Why would they confirm this now if they don’t plan on showing anything in Tokyo next month? Genuinely asking.

Don't believe me? How about Akio Toyoda

Im not against it, I know its coming, and im definitely on board as long as its not my primary car (yet).
But like I said, I want interesting cars.
What is out there right now is pretty much an electrified version of a corolla (Leaf, Volt/bolt), or an electrified version of a BMW (Tesla range) , with a sprinkle of weirdness just to make things interesting....

Those don't really make me WANT them...but the electrified hippie van? sign me up!

Ahhhh. Not only did I miss read what you wrote as it being Subaru that was accused of monopoly (that did baffle me) but I had not heard of the Toyota issue either. If it was the 80s I would not have followed it since I didn't give one single F about Japanese cars at that point.

We are focused on one line of the news. The announcement is not just that they will make a second gen. In fact they just sort of threw that in as an afterthought. The big news they are conveying is their EV stuff. THAT is what we will see at the show. Just wait and see.
