If you where me with 78k on the clock. No signs of trouble. Is it worth the risk for a dealership tech to go digging into the engine to fix this?

Depends on your dealership. Most of the times if you see reviews on larger city dealers and they aren't bad they will be okay since they are fairly regulated and have the training needed.

Out here in remote Australia we have dealers that are legit one step from being classed as mentally retarted. To the extent that I've seen them cross thread 5 wheelnuts and not mention it, only for the person to find out after they go to change wheels that they just uggadugged the wheel nuts on until they looked like they were on correctly.

I'm thinking of letting them doing it and getting a fresh engine when they screw it up.

Yeah same thing I'm wondering. They don't actually need to do anything inside the engine (just rocker covers) but there are a lot of fittings and such in the way depending on how they gain access.

The heads have to come off to get a spring compressor on them. So that means the timing cover needs to come off and the cam assembly is all sealed with packing material. This is a massive job. You don’t just pop the covers off and replace springs. Also if you strictly follow the manual it wants you to reseal the cam assemblies and then check the valve clearance. If it’s out then you pull it all apart and clean the packing off (again), shim it up and repeat. This engine is a nightmare to work on. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do crate motors rather than let inexperienced dealers rebuild the engine just to have people come back with all new issues related to the rebuild.

Boo, I'm infected. Yes I meant infected. Lol. Welp, there goes my dream of going FI. Don't want to put any unnecessary stress on the engine. Also not taking it in, I'll roll the dice on this one. Over 100k and it's been rock solid so far.

I highly doubt they would start dropping in crate motors for this issue. If anything it would be the dealership getting paid one time for the warranty work and if it isn’t repaired the right time the first time, the dealership will need to eat the cost until it’s done right.

Yeah, probably right. Mine is on the list but I’m not sure I’d want the dealer working on it. If it was a whole new engine I’d be down.

What is odd is I don’t recall anyone here complaining about failed valve springs. So it sort of shows how many people there are out there with these cars that have problems and aren’t posting about them on this forum. How many people are spinning bearings that also don’t post about it here?
