May I ask how you came to that conclusion?

Based on my own research what others have said here I've come up with what I think are some good minimum specs.
RPM: 30K Power: 3000 Watts Glancing over the list I don't think any meet this. Quote:
Yes I have a strong electronics background, and lots of experience with high voltage and high current systems.

Anyway. None of you would be in this thread if Rob didn't do.it first and prove it could be done. His kit is far more developed than you guys realize. Thats what makes some of ur comments funny. Just wanted to make sure you acknowledged him on page one for giving you inspiration and proving it can work. |

What is the torque spec required to drive the compressor under load at 30k, 50k etc?

I'm using 3000 watts as a good general minimum power reference based on what Toma (I hate to even mention him at this point) said about the Phantom setup.

So neutron at what voltage do you want to run the motor? my feeling tell me it will be over 12V, will you use a step up circuit or do a parallel capacitor charging to serie discharging?

I'm not an expert on charging systems so I'm going to be consulting with a couple of people who are but at the moment I'm thinking a step up transformer. Another challenge is that with a capacitor bank this size you need to balance the charge. This can be done with resistors (less efficient) or charge balancing circuits (more efficient). I also want to add a few other features: -Variable charging rate -Charge indicator on the pack itself -A built in discharge circuit so you can drain the pack for safety if you need to work on it. I still might end up going with SLA batteries, but I wanted to explore the possibility of Ultracapacitors.

Rob has put a lot of effort into the development, so I don't imagine he'd be terribly thrilled to see this DIY thing become a roaring success... but that's the nature of pretty much everything, isn't it? I actually think it's somewhat likely that the guys here start running into a number of pitfalls along the way that end up demonstrating what a good deal Rob's kit really is and showing that there's a bit more to this than slapping a few bits and pieces together and calling it a day. I know I'm over-simplifying what you guys are up to, but you get the idea. For what it's worth, I know there's instructions out there describing how to build your own somewhat basic but probably functional system, though without the advanced motor control that Rob has. I know this because I was asked to review them, probably with the end goal of an endorsement. In the end, I just kept quiet about the whole thing because, while it wasn't necessarily bad, I thought the actual work involved was well beyond the capabilities of pretty much any average DIY enthusiast. The guys here will start discovering that as they go. I'm reasonably sure though that whether they end up with something that works well or not, a lot of people are going to have a lot of fun working on this. |
