Toyota and GM competing to see who is the Recall King?

Following GM's recent recall of Camaros we now get this one for Toyota:

The reality for both manufacturers is that they are trying to nip things in the bud before they get worse. I heard about the recall on the keys for my car. Their were only four incidents, and they were all caused because the operators were sitting too close to the steering column.

Honestly, there's nothing the manufacturers can do about this - no matter how good a design is, the modern car has so many disparate parts put together (From different sources too).
More safety equipment and more features = more things to go wrong

Well GM has recalled over 12 million cars this year alone. I think they can proclaim victory in that regard. No competition there.

I'll take airbags that work too quickly than a ignition that could turn off during down all systems, including airbags and ABS.

Recalls bring money, at least in Toyota's case. They may damage image, on the other hand public awareness has changed, so getting a recall is positive. For the company it is the most sure way of getting the client back to the dealership (look at new cars and buy a new car).

+1. 12M cars is such an insane number, but seriously nothing is scarier than your car just shutting off for no reason which eventually leads to what, how many deaths so far? 20+?
