True, but I'm on my second semester of my sophomore year in college. I tried to keep my highschool class together (only 28 of us) and for the most part, I'm succeeding.

I plan on this being my third car. Probably. After my rotary addiction subsides.

We should be asking this first.. how old are you? First car to own or first car you've ever driven?

First, don't let people here scare you off of an FRS as a first car because they drove like retards when they were 16. You know you and your responsibility level. We don't. My first car was a '98 Corvette about a year and a half ago when I was 16. Everyone thought my parents were crazy, but they trusted me and I showed them I could handle it. No tickets, no accidents, and no breaking the speed limit.... Much. Now I have an FRS, and I love every second of it. Awesome car. Great gas mileage, easy to drive, and it turns heads. And also, if it happens to be the case that your parents are paying for the car, don't let people on here give you crap about it, and don't be ashamed of it. It is what it is. My parents bought both of my cars.
So, to answer your question, if you're going to drive like an asshat, no, this isn't a good first car. Get a beater. However, if you plan on respecting the car and treating it well, I don't think there's a better first car out there. |

Its another vote for "no" from me. Its a better idea to get something more sensible as your first car. Driving isnt all about the car you are in. You have to learn how to keep you brain clear and when you are in a car like the frs, there are alot of urges to either do (speeding and what not) and fears (like damaging the car). When those things hit you, you can start to get unnerved. I remember first learning to drive, it was kinda scary with cars zooming by.
Get 3 years under your belt. There is no risk waiting. But there are risks rushing into it. |

you should probably add a poll to this thread to keep track of the public opinion. just at a glance it seems almost in the middle, maybe leaning towards "no, not a good first car"

I dont think any new car is a good first car. There is a good chance you get into an accident with it. Even if its minor like just backing into something. You should buy a sporty beater car with a manual transmission. Get good at driving. Decision making is the biggest problem for new drivers, not actual skill at driving a car. My first car was a 96 3000GT. I bought it in 2008 as my first car. It was unique, it looked good, it sounded good, the girls liked it. It only cost $4,000. Perfect first car.

I'm 23 and have had the fr-s for roughly 3 weeks now. I will say that I don't think that it should be a first car. I paid for my first car, a '93 mx-3 with my own money and didn't give 2 shits about the thing. I got more speeding tickets in the 3 years I had that (roughly 7 of them) than in the last 5 years in my other cars and that was the least powerful car I have owned.
With that said, 200hp is low for a new car but, anything over 150 is too much, in my opinion, for a new driver. When in a sporty car there is an innate urge to go fast. You will get in trouble and will be paying for it in insurance costs later down the road. If I was you I would look for around a '95 miata if you want something fun. Sure you may think that you're a safe driver, who doesn't think that, but in reality until you have a few years under your belt there is no real reason to risk such a car getting damaged through inexperienced driving. Not only that, but you can't really read what other people are going to do when you've only just gotten on the road. Grab something to quell the urge for lets say atleast 2 years, then jump into an fr-s. You will thank yourself for waiting. I know I'm glad I did. |

Impossible to answer.
The truth of the matter is if you really wanted a sportscar, and had the personality suited to such ownership, you would not let anything stand in your way. Sportscars are emotonal purchases that go against common sense. Since you are asking a crowd of strangers to justify your choice, I have to say that it is not the car for you. The fact that you even begin to care about rear seat room and operating cost just drives the nail into the coffin. Move on, Toyota does sell other cars that do make sense. |
