Now I'm jonesing for a motorcycle since 2 cars + bike sounds much nicer than 2 cars + impractical powerful car. I'm torn on the decision, though, since I live in California and most of my family members with bikes have had a bad experience. Decisions, decisions. On that note, are there any other good alternatives to a naked sv650 for a first bike? Looking for something sporty (will be used 90% in twisties), can sit upright (not 100% priority), and decently quick (at least 13s 1/4 mile).

I have a pair of IH 555-01 21oz. Great jeans but too heavy for the summer months..

Not many I can think of.
(biased though) I've got an SV650 as a forever bike.
Stone solid engine if you aren't into wheelies. The oil pickup won't work well vertically.
Awareness and responsibility are the most important riding characteristics.

Typically a smaller bike is recommended to learn on. And used. Dropping a new bike sucks, and it will happen.
Can sell it later for what you bought it for in most cases. Now is the time to go shopping.
Doesn't need to be the only bike you'll ever have.

Oh. Nevermind. What you want is a Turbo Busa Bro!
Then you can be sure to stay in front.
Wind it up on the straights and park all the corners.
Nobody's going to pass you!

If you aren't opposed to used (I never buy a new motorcycle, too many gently used ones on the market) I would recommend the Honda CB600F or CB900F (Honda 599 and Honda 919 in the US). These are race bikes in street clothing. I absolutely loved my 919, but sold it to fund the FRS.

The engines are detuned ones used in the CBR series of bikes. The 919 will do the quarter in around 11 seconds. Not sure on the 599, but either would be a great starter adult bike.

The 599 had carbs up to 2006. Find an injected bike if you can.
I sold my Nighthawk 650 because I got tired of cleaning out the carbs every spring.
(it gets cold and wet up here)

919s were nice, but wouldn't be my first choice for a first bike.
480 lbs. wet is getting into the intimidating falling over at a stop sign range.

Both good points. The 919 could be considered heavy although I never really thought much about it or had an issue with it but I could see where it would be a challenge for a new rider.

Sounds like all signs point to sv650. Shame they have trouble with wheelies, but I suppose at the point where I want to do those consistently I'll want to upgrade to a supersport/other bike.

That's the thing with bikes. They're compact enough that you can have both.

I've spent way too much time today watching videos and reviews of the 2018 Goldwing Tour.

Highlights:

Lighter by 90 lbs than previous model (and better looking in my opinion)
Overall smaller
Massively improved infotainment including Appleplay
Optional dual-clutch automatic transmission
New engine (same size but decreased bore and longer stroke)

Lowlights:
Cargo room shrank substantially and isn't as usable (funky shapes)
Passenger seat isn't as nice as previous
Costs more than an 86.

My local EagleRider rental place has the 2018s available. Must avoid temptation....
