Just go through insurance, if I'm not mistaken it's not your fault if you tried to avoid it. Your insurance rates shouldn't go up and you just pay the deductible. From your pictures it doesn't look too bad but enough parts are damaged that it looks like a very pricey fix, much more than your deductible. Also as you're taking it apart you might find the damages are worse than you thought. Not sure if anything is bent but the bumper looks like it took the most damage.

Other way around actually in my state anyway. If you swerve to miss a deer go in the ditch and hit a tree your at fault. Its better to if you know you cant safely avoid it just hit it then your not at fault.

Something is definitely tweaked as the fender to hood alignment is way off.

That's what I meant, same as my state. If you try to avoid it but you hit the deer anyways you're not fault but hitting a stationary object while trying to avoid something, you are at fault. If the object is on the road and if it was moving, you're not at fault pretty much. It's too unpredictable and that's mostly why you're not at fault.

You're right, I think the fender might be off more than it may seem in the pictures.

Do insurance. Hitting an animal is a comprehensive claim, one that won't negatively impact your record or your rates. Hopefully your comprehensive deductible is low.

That's really minor damage for a deer. You got really lucky!

I just got off the phone with my insurance. Animals are comprehensive claims. My premium will not go up and my deductible is only $100. I'm a firm believer that autocross and HPDE driving makes you a better driver in emergency situations. I was on the brakes real hard and swerved enough to miss the body of the deer, but not too much to go into the ditch. I know people in similar situations that spun out and flipped their vehicle. The best defensive driving is offensive driving.

To be clear, if you say the deer (or any animal or debris on the highway) was moving and hit you it is comprehensive. If you say it was standing there and you hit it then it is collision. Always say it was moving!

Too much road kill.. where is he? Has he gone over to the dark side? Driving something with more torque and 4 driven wheels.. if this doesn't wake him then he's lost.....

It's a deer, not Boba Fett. If it didn't die right away, it's probably bear poop by now.

Actually it is amazing how much it can take to kill one of those things!
