Cheaper Honda Civic Type R apparently revealed in NHTSA filings

Quote:
The Honda Civic Type R is one of the fastest and most capable hatchbacks around, but with a base MSRP of $34,775, it isn't exactly the most affordable. The high base price is due in part to the mono-spec nature of the car: one trim with all the bells and whistles. That said, it seems that Honda may be working on a second model that ditches some equipment, presumably lowering the car's price. This news was uncovered by The Truth About Cars.

TTAC was digging around in NHTSA filings when it discovered that Honda registered two Type Rs, one listed as a Touring model. Both cars use the same K20C1 turbocharged 2.0-liter and six speed manual, but the separate listing suggests less equipment. On most Hondas, the Touring package includes things like LED lighting, automatic climate control, premium audio and navigation. Expect the lesser Type R to ditch most or all of those features. Smaller wheels and less aggressive aero could be on the table, too.

There's no official word yet from Honda, but as 2018 models roll onto dealer lots we'll keep our ears to the ground.

Eh, sometimes I'd take FWD over AWD depending on how it's all set up. I'd take a CTR over the Focus RS any day of the week.

I see your point, but for the money - no. If I'm paying $35k+ then I don't expect to deal with an engine configuration set up specifically for an economy car. It's easier to justify the cost even if it's econo-car based if you also get AWD in the deal.

Honda better release another version. It's shameful that the CTR is the heaviest Civic you can buy. The Type R version historically (and almost ALWAYS) was the lightest version of the car available.

It would be great if they threw the 2.0T into the base spec coupe body and stripped the options down to the bone.

I test drove the base model civic. Really was not impressed. I know it's the base with the 2.0 but I was expecting a little more go than the current 2008 civic 1.8 that I'm currently dd'ing. It just felt slow and a lot bigger.

Gotta get the turbo model to feel any kind of oomph. Problem is, it comes with that godforsaken garish body kit styling (sad to say.)

Yeah I wouldn't mind trying the turbo. I thought I was getting rid of my current car because the block cracked but we were a couple months still within the warranty Honda extended to the block. So now I have a new motor (short block anyway) in a car with 183,000 miles on it.

Press Release

Radical and Rapid 2018 Honda Civic Type R Goes On Sale

Nov 2, 2017 - TORRANCE, Calif.

After a blazing but abbreviated first model year, the Civic Type R accelerates into 2018 today following the June launch of the limited production run 2017 model. The first Civic Type R Honda ever sold in America, this hottest of hot hatchbacks has been widely praised for its dynamic poise and track prowess. The Civic Type R returns for 2018 with a Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $34,100 (excluding $890 destination and other charges).

With a peak output of 306 horsepower (SAE net) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net) from its muscular 2.0-liter DOHC direct-injected VTEC TurboŽ engine, the Civic Type R is the most powerful Honda ever sold in America. As before, the 2018 Type R is available in one fully equipped trim with a short-throw 6-speed manual transmission, limited slip differential, Adaptive Damper System and an ingenious dual-axis strut front suspension design that virtually eliminates torque steer.

2018 Civic Type R Pricing and EPA Fuel Economy Ratings
Trim — Civic Type R
MSRP1 — $34,100
MSRP1 Including $890 Destination Charge — $34,990
EPA MPG Rating2 (city/highway/combined) — 22 / 28 / 25

The Honda Civic Type R's Adaptive Damper System continually adjusts damping force at all four corners and is tied into the Three-Mode Driving System with comfort, sport and track-focused +R modes. The system modifies damper and throttle response along with steering assist, in accordance with the driver's chosen setting.

Similar to many Civic trims, the 2018 Honda Civic Type R incorporates advanced in-vehicle connectivity and technologies as standard features. These features include Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition and more, offering drivers a comfortable and convenient in-vehicle experience.

Along with the in-vehicle connectivity features, the 2018 Civic Type R is also equipped with advanced safety features, including Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSAŽ) with Traction Control, Advanced 4-Channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, a multi-angle rearview camera with guidelines, and an Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The 2018 Civic Type R for the U.S. market is produced exclusively in Honda's Swindon, UK plant with the engine produced in Anna, Ohio, using domestic and globally-sourced parts.

I'm not surprised that they didn't release an entry level model yet. People are still paying about MSRP for these things, why would Honda undercut themselves? Hopefully in a couple years after the hype dies down though...

^^next time can you preface that release with a note about how nothing has changed? So I don't have to waste my time.

Anyone buying a Type R is not going to be worried that it's FWD. I doubt they're racing them anyway. If you're concerned about the price, there is an Si or even an Lx. I'm pretty sure the Type R isn't competing so much as trying to give Honda fanboys something. First Type R in America right?

I think the Type R holds up just fine. I'm not crazy about the looks, but if I needed something new with 4 doors I would pick the CTR over the Focus RS, STi, and Golf R. Just because it's FWD doesn't mean it can't be a threat on the track. Hell, look at the Focus RS, those things overheat easily on the track and from what I understand the fix to the issue is costly. What good is AWD and more power if you're pulled over waiting for your car to cool down?

Realistically though I would skip all those and buy a 2016 Chevy SS.

True enough. I used to really like the rebadged Holden Monaro that came over as the GTO in 2004-2006. Even now I'll stare when I see the rebadged GTO or an SS. But then I've never wanted to own and drive one since. I'm no fan of gaudy vehicles like the CTR but between the four you mentioned I'd probably prefer the CTR just on an overall usuable level. Not that most of those wouldn't be great cars to own or that I would buy one anytime soon.

I had never heard of such a beast so looked it up and found we never got them here. I would have been checking one out for sure if they had brought them in.

They weren't exactly common here. They sold poorly and then when they stopped were suddenly hot items. Needless to say they have held value pretty well despite being a domestic car made in the last twenty years.
